The sport is being able to handle a stock car and racing with 42 other drivers on the track going at speeds of 180-200mph... it's alot harder than it sounds or looks on tv. If you can manage to not wreck all the time, or create wrecks, then you are a good athlete at being a race car driver.
You still have to be in good physical shape to be able to handle being inside a cramped up space, during the summer, the temp. in the car reaches around 140 degrees and your stuck in it for 3-4 hours of racing. To be able to handle the car that long and that temp. you have to be a good sport at it.

that may be ur opinion. what's the purpose. there's a "what's the purpose" question for every sport, and there's a reason for the liking of each sport. in NASCAR, it's the rush of whether or not the leader will get passed before he finishes. and whether or not someone will crash. and also, the intensity of it. with few laps to go, and two with a big lead, whose gonna WIN!!!!!??? it gets intense at the end, and it's fun to see who wins. it's fun for many to watch. maybe not to u. i mean, even the really popular sports, not everyone likes. such as baseball. not every1 likes baseball(not including me, i luv baseball). and not every1 watches football or basketball. so what? that doesn't mean they ain't a sport. or that they're boring. they just dont meat some1's interest. y don't u focus on a sport u do like instead of focusing on a sport u don't. let us NASCAR fans do our thing, and u do ur thing, and we'll all be happy. K????

The purpose is for entertainment and to forget about the weekly grind for a good part of a Sunday afternoon or Saturday evening. It has a lot of drama and amounts to a super charged, high paced soap opera. Whether you define it at as a sport or not doesn't concern most NASCAR fans and you are right, it's not for everyone. So you enjoy what you like and we will do the same.

it is entertainment as all sports are.
you can think of a race as a novel where you are following your favorite driver as the hero. The start is normal exciting with a lot of action and you hope the hero can get through the craziness. the middle part is more settled but with moments of terror and thrill. finally the end may get you heart pumping as you sit at the edge of your seat.

I think people who ask this question have never really watched a race, a whole race. And the key is not watching cars go around, it is watching your driver and his story as it unfolds along with 42 other drivers. Try it pick someone anyone and follow his story the whole weekend find out where he qualified or watch it on fri, check out his web site, then watch the race and follow where he is the whole race. in your mind ride with him.

I like NASCAR because it is the most exciting thing ever. It isn't just cars going around in a circle it is the competition they have and how hard they work to win. It is also about the arguments to can get in with friends over which driver is better!

What's the purpose of watching guys hit a little white ball with a metal stick, just to then go walk and find it so you can hit it again? What's the point of 10 guys running up and down a court bouncing a ball and trying to put in in a net? The point is that it is something that many people enjoy to watch. It offers excitement and entertainment, and it gives people the opportunity to put their beliefs in a single person or team in hopes that they will win. That's the purpose. And it is just as much a sport as baseball or golf.

Whats the point in trying to carry a ball past a line?

Whats the point in trying to knock a ball in a goal?

Whats the point in tyring to throw a ball through a hoop?

Whats the point in trying to hit a ball in a hole?

Whats the point in trying to hit a ball so so you can run?

Whats the point in trying to hit a puck past someone?

Whats the point in trying to hit a ball back and forth?

The answer to all these questions are the same.......because they are fun and entertaining. NASCAR is one of the best sports out there today. Sure, you don't have to watch it or like it, but some people do. I don't watch Soccer and I don't really care for it, so is it a sport?

The point of any sport is to be better than everyone else. So to answer your question, I ask another question. Why does anyone watch any sport?

Some do it for entertainment

Some do it for betting

Some do it because they have a vested interest.

I watch because I love racing.

Its a rush. watching cars go 160-200mph bumper to bumper.

These guys have to be in shape. they put on a lot of G Forces. A driver can loose between 10-15 lbs each race, because they sweat so much.

Try watching a race. There is a good one on July 7 Saturday night. Its the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. They will race 3 wide, side by side, bumper to bumper 190mph with out even touching the brakes.

Now the exciting part, if one cars makes one wrong move, it can take out a pack of cars of about 10-25 cars. the biggest crash took out 29 cars. Oh and last time they raced at Daytona, the winner and second place finished side by side
like .007 sec difference, and 17th finished on his roof, on fire!
This will be a good race!

These guys have got to have control, and they know what they are doing!

WHAT??? THUMBS DOWN????

DANG IT!!!! DANG YOU GREEN HAIR!!!!!!!!
