Start with a few easy things.

Replace the spark plugs
Replace the spark plug wires,
Replace the distributor cap
Change the air filter (not many think about this)

As the engine gets older, it will wear, and you may not have the full compression that you had before. If the simple things dont work, have the compression checked. You may have worn rings or the valves may be out of adjustment.

It doesnt matter how old your car is it still should have decent accell, true the older your car is the more worn out the engine becomes but many factors come into play before saying your car is a total peice o junk. It could be a fuel filter that needs changing. Also it could be the trottle body sensor or passage is clogged up with carbon. It might need a tune up with new plugs and wires. If your a do it yourselfer change the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and fuel filter see if that fixes it if not get it checked at a local garage for a few bucks before going buy you a new car :-) it might be a 50 - 100 fix!

You have a slow car, 88 Toyota Camry with 199707 miles on it. That is a lot of miles, that is an old car, and Toyotas aren't good at accelerating.

At that many miles you need to replace your plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, and have the injectors cleaned by a good mechanic. Also you need to have your engine flushed.

Have a shop do a compression test before you start spending lots of money on a really old car, I guess engine is worn out.

Do a basic tune up and change fuel filter . One people over look is the catalytic converter . Disconnect it and see what happens.

MXM had a good point, my 2000 Celica was doing that, and after a full tune-up, replacing the O2 sensor, etc. all I needed to do was adjust the throttle sensor... back to running good!!

The fuel filter could be clogged up or need changing or a line could be clogged. Also your air filter might need to be replaced. You might need a tune up. If your car is fuel injected the injectors might be clogging up.

honestly man just do a tune up. cuz its either a fuel or spark problem. a tune up will fix the basics on both.

I think buying a Toyota Camry that doesn't have 199,707 miles on it is your best bet.
