I think that man cannot possibly understand all that a divine being truly is so we created gods with very human characteristics (god of love, vengeful, jealous, etc) to fill the void of understanding. However, there is still a void that needs filling that science cannot fill for every person. There is still a need for god in some. People who look within themselves and do not see the potential of their own mind must look for an external deity for guidance. That doesn't mean they're stupid or sheep, it just means that they have a void within themselves that needs to be filled. They have not found the answers they're looking for in science or in themselves, so the look to the divine.

In an analytical way, I can neither prove the existence or non-existence of a god. In the same manner, I am absolutely sure that god as created by man-made religions does not exist. I cannot say for certain there aren't aliens just because I haven't seen one. Same with god. I don't know and I don't really worry about it.

If you look into the universe, you understand that there has to be a higher being. Not only that, but this magnificant creation has to be maintained. The Bible tells us that God has a multitude of angels at his disposal. What is their purpose? Surely, a host of them are designed to oversee God's creation. No imagination in the world could conceive such beauty. And nothing so marvelous could have occurred by accident.
Our own bodies are of such magnificance that we simply cannot ignore God's hand. To do so is dishonest. We become liars, if we deny God's creation as His own. This is not about religion. It is about TRUTH.

I guess you must be the only person on Earth with all the answers then. Clearly, we have no other viable explanation for the orgin of things, that alone tells us something smarther than us is out there. Incidently, I don't "believe" in God, I know Him to exist. It's not even an arguement for me. Can you be that sure of anything? By the way, christianity is a belief, not a religion.

Currently, I like the idea that religions are simply advanced forms of ancestor worship.
You can actually track the evolution of religion and the introduction of certain ritual elements, etc...
A good reference for this is a book called "Breaking the Spell" by Daniel C. Dennett. I highly recommend it.

Bingo.
Gods used to be reasonable explanations for things like lightning, disease, the origin of the universe, and diversity of life.
Now we know about electricity, germs, the Big Bang, and evolution. The God hypothesis is no longer needed for anything.
This is why we can say, "God is dead."
