I just recently read today that there was suppose to be a meeting abou the closure of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and that the detainees may be transfered to Fort Leavenworth KS. My husband is currently stationed at GITMO. He is only 2 months into a year tour there. If they would decide to do this and close GITMO down, what would they do with the troops who are currently stationed there? How long do you think this whole process would take? I know not to get my hopes up about my husbands early homecoming, due to the fact that who knows they may decide to send him to Iraq or something instead of sending him home. It would be nice though!! But any insight into this subject would be grealty appreciated!!! THANK YOU!!!

They're talking of closing the prison not the base. Unfortunately you may be missing him a bit longer.

I read they have 380 detainees. They have two places in the US to move some. They need about a hundred more beds. Laura and Momma Bush have expressed that this is a blot on the war and Bush... They were to meet today but given the people when it leaked where and when it was changed. VP Cheney is not in favor of this and giving these folks any rights.
It appears Bush will find a place, offer some humanity and close Gitmo only when they are all placed. I would expect they will be moved in secret, we will find out later. it will take a few months but maybe not as long as the ones your husband has left. He may be reassigned to travel with them and to their new location.
I pray for all involved this one is resolved finally. God bless you and your family. Please express this person's, me, eternal gratitude for his service, your's too. TY.

* they for obvious reasons will reduce the US troops there even if they keep the base. You know the military better than I. They can and will do just about anything and your husband can not tell you a thing. XX Hugs to you.

My understanding is they were talking about closing the detention center, not the entire naval base. Gitmo is a strategic resource that should be maintained. If the detention center remains controversial, and we are better served by its relocation, than all the power to the decision.

if he is stationed at the main base and not the detainee center, then he will not be going anywhere.

If he is at the detainnee center, then he will most likely be going with the detainees to wherever they get sent
