What is the min size ups I could buy to run the 36" tv that has a 4.5amp rating? I tried a 120W/650VA and it wouldn't keep it on a few seconds.

Its part of a cctv system here at work. I wanted to make sure we had the right one. We have a generator but we need a ups for the data center cctv system in the command center. The data center is under UPS but the command center is only under the generator. So we needed something to power the 36" tv monitor we use for the TV and also another one for the camera system powersupply and the dvr server. We are thinging about two 1500VA by apc. One for the 36" TV and another one for the 24VAC x8 and the dvr server. Would that would for a minute or two until the generator starts up?

You watt rating should have been much closer to your va rating. Did you read it wrong?

120w=about 1 amp
650va=5.6amps (both at 115volts)

It's very hard to pick out a supply because the rating systems are all screwed up. Most don't list if that "650va" is continuous or surge for so many seconds.

I would guess around 900va with a watt rating closer to 500. I think you would send up doing better buying 200 dollar genorator. How often do you plan on doing this? Deep cycle battery with a inverter would last longer. (you would need a battery charger too if you don't have on to charge it after the power comes back on)

The problem is that VA (volt-amps) is rated for mainly resistive loads, which a tv is. If this was a motor you were using, then it would be a different rating including the phase angle you needed. The higher the VA you buy, the longer the tv can run without power. If you're looking for good, clean power, you won't get that from a UPS since they have horrible harmonic distortion (17% can be the low end) and are meant for PCs and their power supplies to cpmvert the voltage to usable DC. I recommend a surge protector unless you have bad power in your area, or are using this in order to keep playing a game or something with your xbox or whatever.

Good luck.

Check the battery of UPS maybe is bad. The 650 VA is Ok for that TV and would keep it on for around 4-5 minutes

get a small battery op TV for the 2 minutes that you are waiting on the generator.
