I am 14 and was raised Christian.

This year in Science and Geography we learned about the big bang theory and eveolution. These are both quite reasonable and have me questioning religion.

I'm not sure what to do because 99% of me agrees with these theorys but the other 1% is going "you're going to hell. you know that, right?"

Some advice would be nice, please and thanks.

Okay, I want to thank all of you who have given answers so far. I'm not going to pick a best answer because, well, I don't know which is the best answer. It's probably going to take me some time to come to a conclusion.

Evolution and Creation are not mutually exclusive.

God created evolution. How about that one?

The world isn't black-and-white. There IS a middle ground. The Bible often speaks metaphorically, and does have several inconsistencies. Reconcile them with what seems reasonable in your beliefs. If you can't find anything reasonable in your beliefs, maybe you need to change the way you believe. I am perfectly comfortable having reconciled science and belief in my personal 'religion'. That's why I enjoy being nondenominational. It allows for more fluid freedom of belief and the humility to accept when something you have believed is wrong.

Genesis was the song of Moses. Moses had incorporated the knowledge he had been given into his song. It was like a flower. It was so beautiful. I doesn't rhyme in English though, but I can imagine it in his language that he spoke. No one knows for sure what exactly happened in the beginning. The OT is still very vague. If you had been there, you would really have loved it. Some people have visions or dreams of glimpses of it. Solomon was one of them. He spoke very briefly on the subject. It was a wonder to be sure. I am sure 'the big bang' may have happened. The scientist that . invented that idea may have ben right. According to Genesis, the world was already there, but it was formless and void, which means that it had no set form yet, and it had nothing on it. The waters were there at one point. The song of Moses, was not clear on everything, so a day could be considered a million or two years. The song was not meant to be clear and precise, was not meant to be start a religion, but it was meant to be a beautiful song. The waters stirred and the waves grew, and solid land appeared out of the water, and the land grew and grew, the waves washed over the shores of this new land... you get the picture. Those details weren't incorporated into the song. How man came from here, and developed into nations and the song of the birth of the earth was called "Genesis," which means beginning. What beginning we are talking about? I am sure that The beginning of all time, wasn't 'the big bang' either. Maybe the beginning of things. There could have been other universes created before this 'big' event for our universe. If the Earth was formless and void, was it because something happened to it before to make it so? The beginning of the world as we know it, and this race of Adam was described in Genesis. Not the beginning of time, or ??? The Earth could have been used by another race before them and had been scrapped, who knows. Moses wouldn't have been taught that, wouldn't have sung about that, just what was relevant to our race and beginning.

What kind of song would describe the big bang? Maybe rock? Somehow, I don't picture Moses singing hiphop either.

But then again, what do I know?

If you only believed in religion because you are scared to go to hell then none of it was worht it. Believe what ever you feel is right, all things don't have to be only black or white.Bbelive both if you want, or something completley different, the truth that has never changed is that no one really knows. We believe in Jesus because it was written in a book that was man made, and we also believe in the big bang which also came from men. (people). The thought of God may seems unreasonable and impossible, but I don't think we just got hear on accident for no reason at all. Good Luck!!!!

Faith is an interesting thing. It can either be the glory of you heart or the bane of your existence.

You have done nothing wrong in getting an education. There are those that believe that both theories are correct. You will not go to hell for having an opinion, no matter what the Christians tell you.

Good luck, email me if I can help

The majority of practicing, believing Christians today accept both evolution and the Big Bang theory. You don't have to give up Christ to accept science. Nowhere in all of Christianity or the Bible does it say that you avoid hell by believing that every word in the Bible is true. You only have to believe in Jesus.

Find some less fundamentalist Christians to talk to and work out your own set of beliefs.

You may have been raised in a Christian home but it seems you may need to explore the roots of your faith. Why do you believe what you believe their are a lot of good reasons to believe in God, Jesus and the Bible so you need to work that out with study and prayer.
Also i wouln't tottaly rule out theistic eveolution- the beleive that God created everything being the arcitect and director of eveolution.
Don't let hell be your only reason to believe (though dont forget it) learn to love Christ with all your heart.

Go to college, or take college courses. Especially biology. You will no longer be confused.

It's a great thing that your logic is turned on.

My dear you wont go to hell. Start reading the bible more you'll realize the contradictions and the falliacies. The more you learn in both areas the more you will realize the truth.

Truth being the scientifical facts and evidence that we have. And how silly the whole idea of god is...dont worry i was once in your position and it took me 19 years to realize that i was afraid of nothing.

all theory can be reasonable for us because its been created by human thought like we have in our head.

in empirical studies you can proof a theory
but, in a matter of the past, the theory can not be tested, so honey, you are not going to hell if you are a bit agree with the theory, but for you know, the evolution and the big bang theory haven't have any solid proof about it,

i think the theory is quite reasonable too, but there are still a lot of missing link, like the likeness of us and ape family, untill now, scientist haven't found any specimen from a species that have both human and ape physical aspects.

and for you to know, there is no proof that a DNA design could change, our DNA chain have only a little degree of different with chimpanzee, yet we are so different, and there is no proof that we have the same ancestor with it, genetically.
DNA is important because it is a blueprint of our physiology (physical look).

Physiology may change in the process of adaptation, but it won't change our DNA, for example, there are twins with similar DNA that have a different physiology, and it can be different because of the effect of their surrounding.

you are still young, you need a lot of reading, or if you don't like to read ask people who likes to read :)

in a matter of Christian offense to evolution..you still have a lot of time to think about it and discuss it.

Remember, human invented that theory, and its also human who writes the bible. ;)

Studying the Holy Scriptures does not mean "checking your brain at the door of the Church".

Remember, both the "big bang" and evolution are "theories". Nothing more. God could have used either one to fulfill His ultimate role on Creation. There is no reason to doubt. "The Heavens declare the glory of God."

Keep the faith. Keep your brain alive. And God bless your journey.

Most Christians have no problem accepting the findings of science.

The Bible isn't a work of science, was never meant to be; it's a religious book written long before the development of modern science.

BTW, I'm an atheist -- jump on in, the water's fine; on the other hand, most people who believe in god see no problem in accepting scientific truth, too.

Ignore all the people who think you need to pick one.

Look at it this way, if you believe god made us, he made us with brains, and intends us to use our brains.
