I've been getting up every day this week at nine, then going to work out at ten. Then I come home, and it's 10:40, and I do some weight lifting. Is it best to eat before I go work out, or after I do? My sister told me that if you eat less than an hour after working out, your body doesn't burn the fat. Is that true? Sometimes if I eat before working out, I feel sick, but I really don't want to skip breakfast, or I eat too much during the day. So, before or after I work out? How long before or after?

I try eating a little snack before before i workout. If you just woke up you haven't eaten in hours. A lot of people try working out right after they wake up because they think they will burn more calories. True, but after a workout I tend to get hunger if I do that. So I eat a snack before and that keeps me from getting dizzy or nauseus during the workout. So you could eat a little snack and then workout. You shouldn't eat a full meal less thatn 30min before you workout or you could get sick from that too. Most people I've talked to told me to eat just a small snack like some fruit or something after a workout to feel full. so you could eat breakfast first and then have the snack after the workout.

Best time to eat is within an hour after you have done a workout. Your body uses the fat you have, so what you eat after a workout isn't part of that equation. But what is important is that vital nutrients have to be replaced so your body can rebuild. And that has to happen within a critical period of time. The window is wide open immediately after, and gradually closes during the next hour.
After a workout, your metabolic rate is still high, and you will burn calories at a higher rate (even if you do nothing at all) for a period of up to four hours.
So sorry, your sister is wrong. The best time to eat is after you've done a good workout.

you should eat whenever your body feels comfortable eating. is pre workout meals make you feel ill then don't do it that way. i would only suggest eating before workout if you are doing a super super hard, really taxing workout. doesn't sound like you are that intense though so after is fine.

weight training is the exercise that has you burning calories for 24-48 hours after your workout because your muscles take a long time to regenerate after having been torn down by lifting extra weight. cardio is not like this and you only burn calories when you are working out and perhaps a few minutes after until your heat rate returns to normal.

what your sister says is really not true...at least the matter is so much more complicated and involves more variables than she is giving credit for so i wouldn't worry about that. i tend to eat right after my cardio workouts (because it makes me sick to do so before) but i always eat before my weight training routine because it is VERY VERY difficult. all bodies vary slightly so what one person says that they know is true for them might not be true for you as well. eat when you are hungry or if you are feeling fatigued...not a moment sooner. :)

You need to eat something before, even if it's one bite of toast. Otherwise, your body will hold on to all of the fat, and you won't lose any weight. Then you can come home and eat more after.
