Its not like scientist and killing third trimester babies. They are just taking things that would normally go in the trash and trying to saves lives and reduce suffering with it. What is the problem?

because in their eyes, it's the same as an abortion. Someone getting pregnant and then taking the embryo, but they obviously don't understand either process. There are so many embryos left over from each in vitro procedure (like, more than 10 ok? They throw them in the trash, all those babies omg! -sarcasm-) that will get thrown away, we can't we use them, it is not a baby and has to be thrown away because the cells would never live long enough for another procedure and the fact that you want embryos all from the same eggs and sperms in your in vitro procedure, not embryos from someone else. They use a slippery slope fallacy to justify their reasons...it's sad.

The use of embryonic stem cells necessitates the destruction of the human embryo, the stem cell research is the same as in the abortion debate. The fundamental moral question is whether the early embryo is a human life. Most christians believe it is.

Particularly troubling for pro-life advocates is the fact that so far there have been no successful therapies developed using embryonic stem cells in humans. In addition "the most recent studies in animals have shown embryonic stem cells to be unstable and unpredictable," according to CMDA

An embryo is a human life. The scientists are killing these human lives. That's murder. That's why the church is against it. Because God says not to kill the innocent. Not to kill for selfish reasons.

No embryonic stell has cured any disease yet. All the diseases that have been cured or helped in any way so far have been done by stem cells taken from adult stem cells. So we don't need to keep killing these baby embryos. Throwing them out is still murder but we shouldn't be making embryos outside the womb to begin with.

Christians are opposed to fetal stem cell research because those who promote it do not want to restrict it to only fetuses that were already going to be destroyed. They want to allow the creation of fetuses for the purpose of being destroyed. Since one side sees these "fetuses" as non-human, they see no reasons for any boundaries. The other side sees them as living beings and sees the danger in the other side's way of thinking.

Current research shows the most promise with adult stem cell research anyway, so the focus on fetal stem cell research has taken on a "pro-choice" (or anti-life) vehemence, which many Christians find non-sensical, actually in opposition to current science, and dangerous.

Even all the ranting about how Bush has allowed only limited research is disingenuous as scientists haven't begun to use up all the stem cell lines that he allowed for research. The research is very expensive and not as common as many would try to have us believe.

Blessings.

It isn't stem cell research that we are against. It is embryonic stem cell research that we are against. It is because embryos are human life, and destroying them, especially for research, is an outrage to us, and is equated with what Hitler did to the Jews and others he felt were undesirables.

I live in California, and recently this state passed a referendum which gave billions of dollars to support embryonic stem cell research. As of the latest report, there are no therapies that have been derived from these, nor are they anticipating anything in the near future.

Adult and umbilical cord stem cell research has produced results, and over 70 therapies have come to pass on these. If these are working, and embryonic stem cell research isn't, then these innocent embryos are being destroyed for nothing.

Just to add, even if some therapy were to come from such research, it still destroys life, and would be akin to taking one life for the benefit of another, and that without the consent of the one destroyed.

EDIT for the Atheist Geek above: I have done the research, and no "handlers" have told me squat. We don't want to see the embryos thrown in the trash either. It's amazing to me how people will justify anything as long as some "good" comes out of it.

We're not against stem cell research. Studies have proven that science doesn't need aborted babies to do stem cell research.

Research into adult stem cells has been fueled by their abilities to divide or self-renew indefinitely and generate all the cell types of the organ from which they originate — potentially regenerating the entire organ from a few cells. Unlike embryonic stem cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not controversial because the production of adult stem cells does not require the destruction of an embryo. Adult stem cells can be isolated from a tissue sample obtained from an adult. They have mainly been studied in humans and model organisms such as mice and rats.

Adult stem cells are being developed for use in treatments for a variety of human conditions, ranging from blindness to spinal cord injury. Since adult stem cells can be harvested from the patient, potential ethical issues and immunogenic rejection are averted

You are mistaken.

Embryonic stem cell is not taken from aborted babies. The stem cells from them prove unsustainable. New innocent babies must be created and then killed before they can hope to harvest even a few sustainable stem cells. And embryonic stem cells are NOT easily sustained.

Christians, for the most part, are in favor of naturally harvested non-destructive and non-creative stem cell research that is taken from the umbilical cord and placenta AFTER a woman gives birth to her child and they are easily sustainable.

Not only is it natural, cost effective, but there is an ENDLESS supply of stem cells that can be harvested from the umbilical cord and placenta which are far richer in natural stem cells AFTER a woman gives birth to her child.

Stem cells are ALREADY there to be studied and researched NOW. There are more naturally derived stem cells in one umbilical cord and/or one placenta than can be gained from 1000s of embryonic stem cells that can ONLY be harvested after an unborn baby is killed. And it must be killed BEFORE any hope of one stem cell can be created.

Embryonic stem cell research not only kills the innocent unborn baby, but it costs $$$$ just to equip one lab to study embryonic stem cells & harvesting sustainable embryonic stem cells is not guaranteed or a given. They can be lost because of lab/technician error. So what is the point of sinking $$$$$$ money and time into a "maybe" when there are abundant supplies of viable stem cells to researched and tested to help cure people of illness, and disease NOW?

What is the BIG DEAL?
In simplest terms, embryonic stem cell research is MURDER, worse yet, it is planned, premeditated murder. Moral people want no part of murder and they DEFINITELY do not want their hard-earned tax dollars to pay for premeditated murder either.

And know this, AND remember this, one day, whether you believe in God Almighty or not, ONE DAY, anyone who willingly & knowingly aborted a baby and/or killed an innocent baby for the sake of research, WILL face God Almighty and Jesus Christ alone, and EVERY innocent life they killed for the sake of research and/or for convenience because they did not want it WILL see that child again and will face that baby and will be expected to explain to that baby and God Almighty and Jesus Christ WHY they did it.

The theists here just don't want to hear it.

Stem cell research as proposed would be working with zygotes ALREADY SLATED FOR DESTRUCTION. If Christians were really trying to prevent what they think of as murder of humans, then they should block any attempts at in-vitro fertilization, which is what creates so many zygotes in the first place.

Thousands of unused zygotes are disposed of routinely. The stem cell bill that Bush just vetoed is very specific about where the zygotes would have come from:

According to the bill:

B. Ethical Requirements -- Human embryonic stem cells shall be eligible for use in any research conducted or supported by the Secretary if the cells meet each of the following:

(1) The stem cells were derived from human embryos that have been donated from in vitro fertilization clinics, were created for the purposes of fertility treatment, and were in excess of the clinical need of the individuals seeking such treatment.

(2) Prior to the consideration of embryo donation and through consultation with the individuals seeking fertility treatment, it was determined that the embryos would never be implanted in a woman and would otherwise be discarded.

I'm against any kind of "EMBRYONIC" stem cell. All other stem cells are OK with me.

Are you thinking on the "black market" on embryos that will be created????

Are you thinking on all the women that will get pregnant or will be force to get pregnant just to "sell" the embryos????????

Are you telling me that you're so naive that think is not possible???

Mainly because those things shouldn't normally go in the trash. There are ways to do stem cell research that don't include destroying a human embryo. Umbilical cords for one. So really, its not all stem cell research, just the destructive/inhumane ones.

Because their programmers told them to.

See the responses here as a good example. "More advances in adult stem cells than embryonic."
Utter bullpucky, but the user has never bothered to research that for herself, her handler told her that and she accepts it without question.

Asking if someone is human because they comment that the embryos go in the trash. Yup, total ignorance again. They is EXACTLY what happens to the leftovers at a fertility clinic. They fertilize 20-30 embryos and take the 3 or 4 that grow the strongest. Previously the rest were used in stem cell research... but due to the Christian sheep's outrage they now go in the trash instead.
great improvement.

it is a simple matter of accepting the word of an authority figure (usually their pastor or church leader) and never questioning the veracity of it.
