I have a two-door stand alone hardening freezer by Master Built. It is a year and a half old and recently has began running very loud. Its still maintains its temperature very well but is just noisy. I had a service tech out and he says the compressor is "shot".

1. Is it typical for a compressor to be “shot” in a year and a half?

2. Can the compressor be rebuilt/repaired instead of replaced?

I'd be VERY sure that the noise is coming from the compressor and not the condenser fan, for starters. Using a bit of hose or screwdriver to the ear trick should tell you the source. It'd be a shame to do unnecessary work just to find out you've got a bad fan bearing that could have been handled cheaply.

And no, there's no good reason why one should crap out after only a year and a half. If this thing is REALLY only a year and a half old, you DO know that Master-Bilt has a ***4*** year warranty on the compressor (but only 1 on labor), right??? You'll only be out the labor for the swap.

Myself i would go back there and find the noise. There isn't going to be to many things back there that make noise. If the compressor is making noise it's dead. Every compressor i have seen is sealed so you can't fix it without loads of man hours. At 50+ bucks a hour it's cheaper to replace.
It shouldn't be typical but in today's standards all we do is buy the cheapest junk. Even the "better quality" is junk compare to 30 years ago. (not saying you bought but the parts are)
