What types of foods are the best to serve at weddings. I don't want something too fancy or something lame. I'm think buffet but I'm not sure what kind of places I should call and how much I should except to spend. and what kinds of food should we have in the buffet or is it better to serve at the table sort of family type. I'm a big fan of mexican, italian, and oriental. But I like other foods too. should I do a mix or stick to one type? What's your suggestion? The wedding is next July probably around the 12th.

we haven't made up a guest list yet but my guess is that it will be around 100-150 people tops.

With that many people, I would say your best bet is buffet style! Call your local mom and pop caterers, they should have good deals. Good luck!

I don't like going anywhere where I can't identify my food. That being said, if you want buffet, mkae sure everything is labeled. Have choices that are plain and add some sauces on the side or as an option. Usually people offer chicken, fish and beef as meat options and one vegetarian option such as veggie lasagna. Since it is buffet you can pretty much offer anything you'd like! There should be rolls and fruit salad and garden salad and that stuff too. My brother had ham, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, a deli bar, tons of fresh fruit, three kinds of salad and a slew of bread and everyone ate happily. Things that people can identify and know they will like will always be a hit! If you go too fancy it's going to get more expensive and not everyone is willing to try new foods. I would want my guests to be assured thre was going to be something on the menu they like as a backup in case they don't like the chicken in white wine with mushrooms that is also available.

Good luck!

We're doing an Italian pasta bar. We're going to have two pasta chefs (small wedding, under 50 guests) and they will have a selection of precooked noodles (penne, spaghetti, etc), meats (chicken, sausage, etc) and a variety of veggies and sauces (Alfredo, marinara, pesto, etc). You'll make your selections and the chef will saute it all up for you right there, exactly how you want it. We are also going to have a couple of trays of lasagna and an Italian chicken. For sides we're going to have lots of good breads, a large Cesar salad and a fruit dish of some sort.

We are also having some sort of unique drink station, smoothies or Italian sodas, or something a long those lines.

I've seen some great ideas for a taco bar a long the same lines. Themeing your food can be a very special and fun touch to your wedding reception, something people will definitely remember.

This is certainly no better nor worse than anybody else's suggestions, but we're doing an upscale Texas barbeque theme. It's partly served and partly buffet. The guests will be served black bean soup with shredded cheddar, and then served a mixed salad. After that, they will go to an attended buffet and choose among beef shish-ke-bob, grilled chicken in a pineapple/jalapeno sauce, shredded bbq pork on petite buns, roasted potatoes, and veggie kabobs served with a roasted red pepper sauce. Then, an apple tart with ice cream witll be served for dessert (with wedding cupcakes and coffee available later). We liked that our guests have choices for their main entree, and liked the elegance of a served meal, so we got both!

Consider people that might have diet restrictions. Besides the usual vegetarians there are others.

Some people may be allergic to fruit/nuts so you need a few dishes without that

If you invited Jewish guests you need something kosher

I know there are people like me who can't eat spicy foods or anything hard to digest like raw veggies.

Some people won't eat seafood

I think as long as you think about your guests tastes as well as your own you will be fine. You can mix and match if you want just make sure they go together for instance enchilladas on a plate with spaghetti might not taste good.

I'm doing an appetizer buffet for my beach wedding, because it's an outdoor tropical theme, we're having jamaican food and seafood...with some other types mixed in as well.
Expect to pay anywhere from $25-50 per person for the reception.

Start calling catering companies, or make the food yourself and freeze, you have a year which will fly by, call restaurants that have buffet and see what kind of deal you can get for the number of people that you intend on inviting.

Buffet is cheaper than sit-down. The amount you would spend is dependent on how many people you need to feed and how many different choices you would like to have. I would recommend a variety of meats (beef, chicken, fish) with veggies that are approriate for all. Italian at a wedding is a bad idea to me - you are wearing a WHITE dress! ;)
