What are my chances of becoming an Officer? And what else does the Navy look for besides grades? I am a good student, yet I became bored in college and let my grades slip in my last few semesters. This does not reflect my actual workmanship. I recieved a 97 on the ASVAB in High School and am quite confident I could do the same now. I am also an excellent runner and swimmer, as I plan to join the SEALs provided I can get into OCS.

a few points:

to be competitive, you really need a 3.5 or higher GPA in a technical Major. your GPA and your degree are not stellar.

Other qualities: leadership roles, volunteerism, sports, organizations and other activities.

WRT SEaL training: Officers get ONE shot at BUD/s. if they fail( and 70% do) they do not get another shot. ever. Enlisted, however, can.

Frankly, being bored isn't an excuse the Navy will likely look upon favorably.

I would think your chances would be quite good. They don't require a 4.0 in order to become an officer just a degree but I think they prefer you to have classes in ROTC or military science.. I think you'll be a shoe in. They wanted me bot I already put in my time before I went to college. Darn shame too cause they had a turkey shoot using the .22 calibers for the ROTC training and I took the first turkey and shot one point lower than the rifle captain for the whole shoot.

I'm not positive about the Navy, but I know with the Army if you have a degree and score high enough on your ASVAB you can go to OCS. I reccomend talking to your local recruiter about your options.

Here is something I found from Quantico, the Marine OCS program anyway:

P.S. The SEALS accept bubbas from the Corps too.

You're definately qualified to become an officer. And SEALs are recruiting hard right now. I'd move on this right away!

Let's face it, if you want to be an officer all you have to do is finish college. If you want to go to Annapolis get to know your congressman and get a great letter of recommendation from him/her, that'll go a long way.

I think you should pursue it, even if you don't think your GPA is high enough. Show them that you have what it takes, and it's not just the grades that matter! Good for you for wanting to serve our country!
