My son usually goes to bed around 10pm (its summer vacation). He does not get up during the night but yet he sleeps until noon or later. Is it due a hormonal change?

Since it is summer vacation I let my kids stay up late on the weekends. The later they stay up the later they sleep the next day. Plus my 10 yr old has been experiencing hormonal changes and she tends to turn in earlier than the other 2 children and sleep later. So hormones could definitely be a factor. I don't think it has anything to do with disease or health problems. They tend to expend a lot of energy during the day especially if they are swimming as mine do almost daily.

When I was that age I had a similar problem, my mom took me to the doctor and I had a common virus called MONO (I dont know what its short for) but I didn't have any other simptoms other than being very tired and sleeping whenever possible. It lasts for months then can reappear as a lower case. My doctor said there was nothing that can be done about it but sleep, and with the amount of sleep that is needed with growing that ment ALOT of sleep for me. Just think about why a baby sleeps so much, its becuase they are growing and most boys start growing between 11 and 14! Try getting him into some activities with other kids, but I wouldn't worry about his sleepiness if he is not being lazy with normal chores and such! Good LUCK

I think you should make him get up around 11. He may be tired but no one needs to just sleep the whole day away, and 11 is sleeping in quite a bit in my opinion. He may be growing but summer vacation is not that long now days, and it will be hard adjustment back to getting up for school if he continues to sleep that late.

Every kid wants to sleep in during the summer. I sleep like 14 hours a day, if there's nothing going on that day. Perfectly normal. Unless there are other things going on you think isn't normal? If he's acting depressed, that could be it. Wanting to do nothing but sleep all the time is a huge sign of that. Just stay aware of what's going on in his life and he'll be fine

It could quite possibly be a hormone change. It could be a diet change. Or it could just be that he's exhausted from school and such. My best advice is if it keeps up for more than a couple weeks to take him to the doctor and have him checked out.

lol, I wish I could have slept that long when I was 11. Honestly I don't think it's anythign to worry about. It's summer vacation and he's at an age where he starts to like sleeping again...good luck

Sounds more like he's board! What does he have to get up for? Does he have any fun summer activities? He should be in day camp or something, not just staying home with nothing to do! Give him some chores to do everyday and make sure he has fun too!

I know what you mean, my son is 11 also and sleeps late. I think their bodies are just catching up on the sleep they missed through the school year, with having to get up so early and all...ooh la la la la la.....(sitting with fingers in ears)... I don't want to hear about hormonal changes and stuff...... I am not ready for that......LOL!!

Could be a number of reasons.
He likes to sleep. Some people sleep as much as they can.
He is depressed. Does he show any signs of depression?
(such as sleeping too much, anger, eating too much or too little, apathy, etc.)
He is sneaking out and you don't know it. Set a trap to see.
Get up in the night and look to see if he is there. Etc.
He is doing drugs. Check his room. Look at his eyes.
Does he exhibit any other symptoms of drug use?
Apathy, highs and lows, evaseiveness (more than the average teen), secretiveness, anger, etc.
