I just remembered that Elmo was housed with 2 other male hamsters and she has been growing bigger in the stomache lately....

That's awful. I work at Petsmart, and I can say I've heard stories about this happening, at ALL pet stores. The first concern I would have is whether or not she might be pregnant. Was she housed with other male hamsters? I would recommend taking her with you back to Petco, not to return her but to show the manager that she is, in fact, a SHE and not a HE. Request to check the sex of the other hamsters. Also, I'd definitely require that if Elmo does end up being pregnant, that the store offers to cover her veterinary care. I would under no circumstances give her back. Other than the mis-sexing and the mis-classification, if she's healthy and happy, give her a good home!

I agree with the others, go back and complain to the manager about the wrong sexing of the hamster. Show them that the hamster is female and let them know that you did not want to end up with a pregnant hamster. Try to get them to cover any vet expenses associated with the pregnancy.

I'd complain to the pet store - though I'm not a bit surprised they were wrong about the gender, they always seem to be! I'd have a go at trying to make pet stores more responsible but it might be a waste of time.
I'd definitely tell them the hamster appears to be pregnant, that's outrageous! I'd start doing some research into baby hamster care if I were you - start by calling vets!

Well, simply calling them won't accomplish much other than venting your frustration, which you are also doing here. :) So if you want to DO something about it, then yes, call and ask them if you can return her for a male. But if you don't really care, then chalk it up to accident; I can't see what the point in calling them would be, if not to request an action to be taken. Or maybe she is young and you can't tell yet that she's a male?

well, they wouldnt take elmo back unless you want and go to a vet to be sure why her stomach is growing and if its because shes pregnant either you could ask if petco would take the babies or wait till they are grown and sell them

What good will the call do? You probably won't even get to talk with the person who sold it to you. You'll just p*ss off some poor overworked employee who earns minimum wage.
Just be happy with your pet.
