Impressive, there's a whole science to it. :) Sorry for the newbie question, I had to ask though!

Personally I think answers should be re-ordered with those getting the most thumbs up at the top. And if it's put to a vote then a combination of votes and thumbs up should decide the order

First answer is correct. The first ten spots seem to be popular with the voters. Even a first answer that has nothing to do with the question will get more votes than a correct and most awesome answer showing up on page two.

in voting it does
when people go to vote
the majority are looking for quick points
so they will click the first answer
some people realise this and hold a place

I urge people not to put important questions to the vote if they can help it
sometimes I let some slip by me if I am absent for a few days
and wish I hadnt

If it goes into voting like most questions do, then usually people just pick the top answerer

Sadly, yes, yes it does.

For points people at least. Higher answers tend to rank higher and have a higher likelihood of being picked as best answer.

It's all moot to me, I'm level 7 with 32,000+ points so points do me no good.

!!

Ha, sorry, I couldn't resist.

Because "top" answers get seen more, more thumbs up, is why I think. I think it's irritating.

I will revisit sometimes if I need to post a link or if I give a quick oneliner and decide I want to expand on it.

I guess so.

Placeholders always get an immediate thumbs down from me, since they're non-answers.
