A dealership near me has a car I want to test drive. The problem is, I'm not ready to buy *right* this second. I may possibly be ready in a few weeks, but I wanted to get behind the wheel since the car is so close to me and I've never tested this model before. Also, the car is a little pricey, but I would be willing to buy it if I got a good deal on it. Is it wrong for me to test it even though I'm not ready yet nor entirely sold on that exact one?

Thanks for all the responses! The sales person I've emailed knows I'm not ready just yet, but he told me to contact him whenever I wanted to drive it.
Another thing I wanted to mention, which I'm a little aprehensive about it the car is a manual. I've driven manual before without any problems, but it's been a few years. I don't want to do keep stalling out the car and look like an idiot. That's really the only thing holding me back right now.

Actually, you're doing it the right way. Test drive now so that you can decide if it is what you want. Go to another dealer selling the same brand and test drive there. In a few weeks keeps them waiting but as long as you're interested, they'll keep working with you. Wait until the very end of the month when the sales people are desperate to meet their monthly quota. I'ts worked to my advantage every single time.

My girlfriend and I have been looking for a new car or two for quite some time. Whenever we get a free hour or two, we will go and drive a car that we are considering. We have done a few already and believe we know what we want. You are better off driving more cars than less because it will help you to make an educated decision on what you like and what type of pricing you can expect to pay.
Never feel like you shouldn't drive a car because you aren't sure of whether you want it or not, that is exactly what the test drive is about. A car is too big a purchase not to make sure you like it before signing the papers.

NEVER buy a car without a test drive! EVER! (Actually, it's wrong to buy WITHOUT a test drive! Not legally of course, but I think you know what I'm trying to say!)
Taking a test drive does NOT obligate you to buy the vehicle. AND, when you're ready to buy, test drive the exact vehicle that you are going to buy as well.
This is COMMON in the industry. If a salesman tries you pressure you to buy right now, just get up and walk out.

i sell cars for a living. please go test drive the car. what if you don't like it? what if you do?
as far as the stalling a manual goes, laugh about it with your sales person. you will bond with them. i sold a 2004 mustang to a guy that had NEVER driven a shifter before, and INSISTED on having one. he was so proud the day he came in and told me he had finally driven 24 hours without killing it!!!!! bonding with your sales person is beneficial with you also the next time you are ready to buy. they know you already, they remember you when you come in to do service, and it makes for a much more pleasant experience all around

Not at all. When one is making such a big purchase like a car, it is completely normal to want to shop around before buying. It would be silly of you (no offense) to buy it without test driving it first.

no its not wrong, people test drive cars every day ,and don't buy them, dealers know this, that's why they usually have a demo -cars around, but if i was curious as you id just go and drive it , and see how it drove and ran ,and to see if i liked it ,yes id go test drive it,that's the only way you,ll really find out if that car is going to be what you want, other wise you,ll be doing what your doing right now, wondering,go test drive it,you,ll enjoy it and you ,ll know for sure then, good luck with it hope this helps.

No it is not wrong to test drive a car and not buy it, that is why it is callled a test drive. You don't have to tell them you are def. not buying it right now. Just try it out and then insist that you have to think about it and leave.

no its perfectly ok. just be up front with the dealer right away that your not ready to purchase at the moment but will be soon and that you'd like to test this model out to see if you like it. every dealer will jump at the chance to try to help you find the car that fits your needs, wants, and budget then sell it to you

Just tell the dealer you are interested but you would like to see how it drives. Then when you get back from your test drive, tell them how it was and that you have to figure out your finances and you will get back to them. Then walk out.
