The same reason a Toyota Corolla burns less gasoline than a Ford truck. A smaller body has less mass, and thus requires less fuel to propel it at the same rate as a more massive body. Another way of looking at it is that It takes more energy to push a wagon loaded with 200 lbs of rocks than it would if the wagon was only loaded with 100 lbs. Calories are energy. So it takes less energy to run a small body than it does a large one.

There is less weight to move around and your mass is allot smaller so basically less strain on your body to live thus burning less calories. Kind of like why a truck with nothing in the bed burns less gas then a truck that has 200 pounds of lumber in the bed.

The number of calories you burn is dependent upon mass x exertion. Smaller mass = less calories burned.

It's a combination of having less mass to move, so you do less work, and you have less muscle mass, so fewer muscle fibers burning calories.

When you weigh more, your body requires more energy to maintain normal body function. Using more energy = burning more calories.

Because you need something to burn...ie:Fat..
Fat is stored energy...The body burns that to create "heat" just like fuel to a fire...
