German Shepards are, in my opinion, the BEST type of dog you could ever get. My family has kept German Shepards for 4 generations. My grandparents would tell stories about their Shepards pulling their toddlers from danger, (the busy street or canal near their house), and my mother told me stories about how our family dogs would take care of us when we were little.
Now that I am "grown up" I have 2 of my own. They are so great! They help us dig up weeds in the yard, and love to have a "job" to keep busy. My wife had our son and my male Shepard when she went on a walk the other day and a dog charged the stroller. My shepard picked the other dog up by the neck and shook it a few times, gently, and the other dog ran off. Both of them are very good protectors and would do anything for us if we were in trouble. When we go swimming, if I dive under the surface of the water they will swim out to me and won't swim back to the shore unless I let one of them "tow" me back. I hold onto their tails and they pull me. =)
The only "bad" thing that might be a concern is that they are SO intelligent. They are by nature working dogs and to be in an environment that does not let them get exercise or have something to keep them occupied, they can get mischevious, and are notorious escape artists. Getting another dog to keep our first one company was one of the best things we did. I thought it would end up costing us a lot more but in the long run they both have each other to play with and don't get into trouble at all.
My friends and other family members have different dogs: golden retrievers, boxers, greyhounds, etc... When I play with their dogs you can tell that they are not as protective or smart as the Shepards. These types of dogs might be better suited for being alone.
Hope this helps =)

In college, my room mate had a german shepherd. She was very sweet, just wanted to be in the same room with us. She LOVED to go on long walks and was well behaved.
My puppy now is half german shepherd, and that is the smart half of her. She is learning things quickly and loves to learn new commands. They are working dogs and will get bored if they aren't learning something.
On the other hand, some can be aggressive. If you get a pure breed, make sure it is from a good breeder because those will have the aggression bred out of them (assuming you treat your dog well).
People use them as guard dogs or to be intimidating, and I don't think that is a good idea for a family. That's just my opinion. Occupy the shepherd with learning to do things and going on long walks. That will keep the dog happy and sweet.
A shepherd is NOT the dog to get if you don't have time to spend teaching it things and taking it out.

Depends on the dog, breeder, rescue, etc. German Shepherds have lots of good traits and lots of bad. They are intelligent, easily trained, high energy, loyal, protective, etc. But some of those can be bad too... They are stubborn, which can make training an exercise in patience, can be overly protective, have health issues like bad elbows, hips, eyes, etc.
Every dog is different... I'd recommend spending some time volunteering with a German Shepherd Rescue in your area. You can volunteer to walk the dogs, help groom, etc. The experienced owners can tell you more about the breed.
They are great dogs, but as with all dogs, you have to take the good with the bad.
Good luck.

German Shepherds are loyal family dogs and fearless guardians of the home that excel in obedience work. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, affectionate dogs that make excellent family companions. Their dense, double coat requires regular, thorough brushing, and these large dogs need plenty of outdoor exercise. Training the German Shepherd puppy from an early age is recommended.
The well-bred German Shepherd Dog is stable, sensible, intelligent, quick to learn, loyal and protective of his home and property. Unfortunately, because of the breed's popularity, the German Shepherd Dog has been exploited by some unscrupulous and irresponsible breeders. It's a good idea to be extremely selective when choosing a German Shepherd puppy to ensure that you are getting a well socialized puppy that will have a sound temperament.
I had one growing up. They are great with kids. I know....I use to torment my dog and he still loved me and never hurt me.

When bred and raised properly, German Shepherds are one of the best breeds you could own. But, like all breeds, they have pro's and con's.
Good: fiercely loyal, highly intelligent, easy to train, protective, stunning looks, graceful, adaptable, versatile, athletic, willing to please, high energy, high drive, thrive on human company and when given a job to do.
Bad: can be wary of strangers -- don't expect a Labrador or Golden Retriever type personality from a Shepherd. Can be over protective if not given enough training. Extremely powerful -- not for the faint hearted. Can be destructive and out of control when not given enough training/exercise/stimulation, but that holds true for all breeds of dog.
Overall, a brilliant dog if you can put the time and effort in, especially to training, exercise and socialization. Not an ideal dog for someone with a laid back lifestyle. This is a working breed through and through and a good German Shepherd will be miserable without a job to do.
Good luck in your search. Hope I helped.

I have a male german shepherd and I couldn't ask for a more loving pet. He is very smart, loyal and caring. He listens when told something and he also lets me know if he wants a drink..lol
They are very smart dogs and this is why they are also called "Police Dogs". I would advise anyone to get one . They are also great with kids and have a good temperment. Unless they are trained to do otherwise, these dogs are very gentle.

I have one and I say they are the most intelligent, loyal, faithful, easy to train, bouncy, loving, playful dog you could ever hope to have. I have had a lot of breeds over the years, but nothing compares to my GSD. I would say that they are best with a lot of attention though, they are essentially working dogs and don't do well if left alone a lot.

well, for one thing, german shepherd dogs are fantastic watch dogs and theyre very loyal to their owners, they are also extremely smart.BUTas with most dogs you have to be cautious when it comes to children,do not leave a young child alone with these dogs.any large breed dog such as pit bulls, doberman pinchers, rottwielers etc these breeds are likely to attack at a moments notice.for that matter ANY dog can be aggresive when treatened. so be aware.

Good dogs. Smart, loyal, powerful, all around good dogs. But, just like any other dog, the dog's personality depends on how he's raised.
