I just read a question here on R&S about a guy tryng to convert his 4 year daughter to christianism. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070622073430AAlmKg3&r=w#RJUtDju6VDJ1FzRltJdrjnDep5IwvXi7hbL_94r4zDThKevOyvsb ).Now, I agree he has some serious problems of spiritual nature, still it made me really sad to read all the offensive atheist responses for this question. Atheists are always claiming to be rational, peaceful, accepting and reasonable. Also you always criticise christians for not accepting other peoples beliefs. Look at what has happened in this question, instead of tryng to help the poor guy, most of you proceeded to openly insult him. I mean most of you atheist are very intelligent reasonable people, why not tryng to explain to him that he might be too hung up on religious stuff instead of just insulting him? Woudn’t it help? Wouldn’t even get him to wonder “Hey these pagans are acctually good people, maybe i’ll grow to respect people with beliefs diferent than mine”

I know many christians proceed the same way, and i don’t suport it in anyway, to these christians that offend others in account of their beliefs i say: 1 Corinthians 13! Its all about Love people, without love you get nothing done. [this quotations was directed to christians, non christians feel free to ingnore it, still i’d advice you to try and read it, if you like]

I don’t want to offend anybody and i respect your opinions, even more than that, i’ve grown to love you people and enjoy the disscussions here on R&S (i’ve learned a lot).

If you’re not atheist neither christian know that i’m not neglecting you, feel free to expose your opinion. Its just that these 2 particular groups atract more my interest, also they seem to be the most “agitated” groups here on R&S.

Thanks

Paz de Cristo

Amen! I am in total agreement with you. I am a Christian, personally, but that does not mean that we should not appreciate athiests or other religious beliefs. I think that we can all be intelligent and respectful while still having our exciting and interesting debates. It would be nice to get the same respect from everyone, but that is life. You are so right that BOTH sides of the issue come on here and insult one another and talk about how stupid or ignorant or illogical the other side is. It bugs me some, but honestly it makes me laugh, too. It is kind of silly reading people come on here and try to put down the intelligence of religious or non-religious people, because most of the "haters" on both sides use the most ignorant and stupid arguments and stereotypes to try to "prove" their point. In the end, though, whether or not God exists or not is not really why those people are here. They are just ignorant people with issues, and it makes them feel better to come on here and put others down. I appreciate the people who do not do this, Christian, Muslim, athiest, or other. The ones that DO act like this... I just feel sorry for them. It must really suck to be that ignorant and angry.

p.s. Happygirl's answer above is brilliant and right on.

I really don't understand how you expect to get a reasonable answer to your question. I actually have a hard time actually finding what it is that you are questioning.

So anyway, there will always be people who are offensive and crass, irregardless of their religion (or lack therof). I am an Atheist, and I have no problem with other people and their religions. It seems like you are confusing Atheists with Assholes, which there are no doubt some of within our ranks. I guess the point I always like to clarify with people with profuse spirituality is the fact that they need not impose it on others. Religion is something that need not be forced on an individual. If someone likes something, it is pretty natural to get involved with it. My main problem with Christianity is the fact that everywhere I go, Jesus is forced down my throat. That doesn't mean that I have to go the church and be a raving lunatic about their witty sign out front reminding me that I am damned. But I am generally tolerant of people of different beliefs. I think a true Atheist is a thinking person by nature, and does not go around bashing Christians at every chance. I think that there are better forums for your query than here at Yahoo Answers. You may be reading responses from people claiming to be Atheist that just want to irritate other folks. Religion is something you find, not something that is given to you. I hope you find your answer, and have a great day!

Carl Rogers, a psychotherapist, wrote about how people will call others names, pass judgments, and rant and rave when they feel that they or their values are threatened. This ranting and raving takes the focus of the issue at hand and ends all meaningful discussion. You are correct in assessing these responses not as rational, but emotional, and they really don't have much value in getting the receiver to see another point of view. I've seen all types of people on this site, including those who claim to be "believers" do the same thing.

Blessings.

I'm so pleased on your sincere care!
You know what? Y!A is a great place we can learn from each other, a lot of people had bad opinion but much more other people would learn something valuable from other's menace, too.
For the poor person asked question...
If someone said something bad without thinking, it would be very wise not to be hurt or give it a deep thought. If someone said something bad, sincerely, then I'll take time to think about it seriously. I really hope he wasn't hurt a lot though.
I really appreciate your consideration. It's so nice of you!!!!

That guy was being rediculous about a 4 yr old mind. The responses were all proper. He needs people to show him that a child is not in any position to make life choices. And it would be cruel to that child to determine the child old enough to make that choice.

He gave up on a 4 year old in pushing a belief. Kind of young, right?

I agree with you to an extent. I think this venue, emboldens people to be more rude than they would be in a face to face conversation. They don't seem to realize that their rudeness remains recorded for many to see and affect.
Courtesy of expression would be a nice norm, but I doubt we will ever see it.

Corporate Kermit just tells it like it is. He expresses his true feelings about things and thankfully, here in America, that will never be wrong.
You are right, Athiest do seem to be quite angry all the time. No worries though, JESUS STILL LOVES THEM!

wow. poor guy o.o;;.......i remember once I said I was going to hell (my beliefs are different...it's not really "hell" you just have to repay back your sins and then reborn ^.^) and my christian friend said very..hyperly "you wanna go to HELL!?! blah blah blah about suffering and stuff" (i only said blah because I can't remember the exact words...) and I told her my beliefs and stuff are different; then somebody else (I forgot who -_- ) said "Then what's the best religion? Buddha!?!?" I was going to smack that person once I found out who it was!!! Buddha isn't even a religion. It's Buddhistism...or however you spell it, lol.

I'll repeat my answer to him in case you missed it.

He should be whipped.

He has emotionally given up on his four year old child FOR NOTHING.

I sometimes wish there WAS a hell.

(Ok I changed it from He should be shot but I don't want to get deleted over it)

Personal Laptop Jesus...thanks! I didn't know that either!
