Assistance-food-heath care-housing-child care, anything. I should actually say family of 5 since he has another child living in another household. (Pays for).

Why kind of "assistance" are you talking about? If you are talking about public assistance, you are making too much money so you don't qualified.

I have a family of five and live on less than $40,000 a year with no assistance. I would suggest you sit down and see where your money is being spent and what you can cut back on. Do both adults buy lunch out every day? If so, start taking something from home. Do you have two car payments? Can you sell one and get something cheaper? Are you paying too much for your house? Write down everything that you both spend for a month, even if it's just a pack of gum and see where you can cut spending.

You're not going to live high on that income, but should be able to live reasonably well. Some depends on where you are - if you're in LA, Boston or NYC would be pretty tough. For most of the country, your income is above the median household income.

If the other adult in the household isn't employed, why do you have child care expenses? Is THAT person able to get a job? Or at least watch the kids while you work?
