Is it okay to expect that they will provide at least some refreshments, maybe even a meal if it takes that long? Is it rude for them not to?

food and beer are a must!! it's usually men doing the moving, so don't overthink it. if they've got their beer and their bellies are full, they're happy.

If you take a day out of your life to help someone move, then I believe it is incumbent upon them to provide you with refreshments and food. They should generally have a cooler full of sodas and beer sufficient to allow everyone to have as much as they want. And, at a minimum one meal provided (such as pizza or subs), and if it takes more than 4 hours to do the job then they should provide 2 meals.

They also should say thank you, and that they appreciate your time and effort. Most people don't say that. I don't know why, but they don't.

If it takes a long time, they should definitely offer to buy you lunch or dinner. However, since they are in the process of moving, you really shouldn't expect anything other than fast food then. They might pay you back with a more formal meal later.

They should definitely have at least drinks there for you, since you get so hot and sweaty while moving.

If its a half a day to a day long job, then I do consider it rude to not provide refreshments or a meal.

If its less than half a day I don't expect food, but perhaps a drink, even if its water.

In the conventional center that my school made us volunteer for...we have to work 4 hours than we can have a little meal. We're not suppose to touch any good drink samples off the booths. People with integrity like me would already dried out getting people to sign stuff...

In other words don't expect much, and yes it is very rude of them

A considerate friend would at least do this, if not provide a full meal. After all, they are getting your help for free, they should expect to give something in return.

It is extremely rude to not offer someone that is helping you something to eat and drink. It's not okay to ask someone to help you and then not feed them. I would have given a few hours and at about lunch time I would say I am going out for a meal and not come back.

If I'm asking you to help me move. I'm offering up fresh pizza and all the cold beer you can drink. I've done this the last two times I've changed states inviting two friends each time. You should never be expected to do anything for free. I always let my friends know that all I'm offering is food and drink...if, they're willing to help then they're good friends.

If you did help move and they offere nothing, then they owe you a favor.

Nothing is ever free.

I always would buy drinks and a meal when people helped me move. It's the least you can do for free help.

I'd think a person should offer something, but if you agreed to help them move don't expect anything necessarily.

I would prefer to pay people to move stuff, and avoid that type of situation entirely, unless money is Extremely Tight.

In Texas it would be considered downright rude! Yeah, refreshments during and a good meal afterwards. It's costly to hire movers, don't they know this???
