"I like you a lot" and "I want this to work" is a guy basically saying he wants to continue dating you a little more seriously - he's sort of testing the water to see if it will work out between the two of you as a couple.

When he says "i like you a lot" and uses "strong feelings" it just means he really does like you a lot and he's really feeling strongly about it. Don't assume right away that he's already deeply in love with you when he says these things - he could be getting there but "i want this to work" means he's still unsure whether it will get to that point so he wants to see it it will by getting to know you more.

Remember, actions speak louder than words, so pay close attention to how to treats you more than what he says to you.

he likes you but probably want's to take things slow! witch is a good thing, he may of been hurt in the past and wants to be sure of his feeling towards you, and your feeings towards him, don't move fast if it's meant to be then you have the rest of your life to fall in love with each other spend this time getting to know each other and making sure your right for each other! but good news is sounds like he likes you! if your waiting for the "love" word give him some time!
