you shouldn't have decided to get a tattoo without deciding what you want. your first tattoo should be something you've been wanting. if you just settle with something someone tells you to get, then it's pointless. if you want a tattoo, you should already know what it is. if you don't know what you want, then you shouldn't get one.

Why others ask for opinions on what their first tattoo should be I will never understand! If you were to get one that someone else chose then later on you may regret it. The best tattoo anyone should put on their body is one that represents them. One that tells people who they are and how they feel about themselves and others. My first tattoo was my wedding band. The reason is I'm allergic to jewelry. If I have any kind of jewelry on for more than a few minutes it breaks me out. My second was my childrens' last name with two roses on each side representing them. Get one that you want and you know you will want for ever!

I just got my first tattoo, and I love it. I designed it myself and it took me a year to finish the design before I was happy with it. Be careful when you pick it, you need to make sure its' something you want. Be picky, don't just get anything. Be original! Don't pick a piece of flash (that is the art that is already designed and in a book with a bunch of others) unless you really like it. Get something that you are passionate about. If you love horses, get a small horse galloping around your ankle. As far as placement goes, make sure it's some where that you could cover if you would have a job interview. Some employers don't approve of tattoos and will ask you to cover them.
Basically, be yourself, be careful, be original, be picky, show your passions, and make sure you're happy with the way it looks before they put ink in your body!

If you love very unique things, why don't you come up with your OWN idea? After all, it's your skin. We don't know what you like or who you are. Why would you trust strangers to symbolize you as a human being?

Well, to be "unique" it would need to be something special to you. So, if you take our advise, it will not be unique.
Think of things you enjoy; animals, birds, mantras, even a person.
I have a friend and he was very close to his dad. He had a picture of his dad Tattooed on his arm, very nice.
I love my son (only son I have), I have a flaming heart with his name on my chest over my heart. My first and last tattoo.

Lots of good advice here - Definitely get something meaningful to you. Take your time deciding - you have your whole life to have the tattoo on you. Do not get something trendy like Chinese symbols - They are stupid unless you are actually Chinese. Take your time and come up with the perfect thing.

well this is really somethign you need to think of yourself becuase it will be on you for the rest of your life. here is a way to start...make a list of things you like. could be anything at all...then try and think if any of those things have a special meaning to you. then you can start looking around on the net or at tattoo shops for designs you like...the I suggest changing the design or re-designing your own tattoo.

I would suggest doing some research and think about what means something to you. I have been searching for 2-3 years and finally found something I really like.

depending on your age ..
with me, I was 39 when I got my 1st one ( ( I'm in the planning stages of #3 ) and I went with a simple " Betty Boop " on my left ankle ..Not that much pain ..
My second one ( Last May 06 ) Is my grandson's name on my back with angel wings, declaring that he is my Guardian angel ..That had a few Tear moments ..But NEVER a regret ..
Just consider what This well look like let';s say when your 50 ..

I'm getting my first tattoo soon, it's going to be a snake on my hip. It's a kind of replica of Flea's (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) snake tattoo.
