so you dont need to clean the grill, and to stop food from falling in the grill

Like most people said in this thread, it's either a necessity (small food that would fall through otherwise) or for ease of cleanup.

It's worth noting that using aluminum foil kind of undermines the whole point of cooking on a grill--and that's having the food's fat drippings fall to the coals which are evaporated and returned to the meat through smoke. That's a large component of grilled flavor (outside of the grill marks that are heavy browning through the Milliard Reaction) that people miss for a little added convenience.

A propery-oiled grate is nearly as easy to clean without losing all of that flavor.

Foil is used to keep the grill clean or to prevent small or fine textured food, such as white fish from falling through. The fat drippings can still reach the coals if you will poke a few small holes in the foil.

Because they want to prevent burning. If they learn the techniques of direct and indirect grilling, they wouldn't have to . I like to see the grill marks and you can't get that through the foil.

Foil is used for easier clean up. Without it, the grill has to be cleaned before it can be used again.

To keep the food from sticking to the grill. The easiest way is to spray the grill with cooking spray before you put it on the fire.

So they won't have to clean the grill. Also, some foods are too small and would fall through the grill, and I guess they couldn't be bothered with skewers.

Keep food from sticking and to prevent flare ups. To me this just means you are frying on a grill rather than grilling, but to each hsi own.
