Last one first: No, it's not too late for you to learn to play the violin.
Yes, the violin is a challenging instrument to learn - there are movements and coordination challenges that may make you discouraged. Don't fret - just as you took time to learn to dribble a football or ride a bicycle - so is the violin. It takes time. Be patient.
A decent violin that will give you years of pleasure can cost anywhere from $100 US on up. I'd look for one in the $300 range with bow and case. That way you will have spent enough $$ to give you the incentive to work at playing - but not so much that you will be in debt for years.
OR - and do consider this - rent a violin set from your local music shop. That way if you find that the violin doesn't fit into your lifestyle, you won't be "stuck" with an instrument you'll never use.
Reading notes is like reading a different language with different alphabet. There are phrases, words, idioms, slang, paragraphs, grammar, etc. just like any other language - except that the notes on a staff correspond to pitches as opposed to simple sounds.
So approach learning to read notes as you would learning a new language that uses a different alphabet. Sure. It will be confusing at first, but with practice, it gets better.
Good luck!

It definatly is not too late for you to start, I personally began playing violin when i was 3, and have been playing for 12 years, however I know people who didn't start playing untill they were 30! GIll Shaham is one of the best violinists in the world and he didnt start playing untill he was 7. Age doesnt matter as long as you love what you are doing. Violin is a hard instrument, It takes years of hard work to master but it is so fun to play! It can be pretty expensive (my current teacher charges $40 per hour, however my last teacher charged $100 per hour for lessons). Good violins are expensive (mine was $1200, that is considered cheap for the type of violin I have) and my bow was $3000, however, as a beginner you can rent violins for much cheaper. Note reading is hard for some people and good for others, generally if you are good at math you will be a good note-reader. The good news is that everyone can learn to read notes, it just takes more time and effort for some people.
I hope you decide to play the violin because it is a wonderfull instrument and you could be great at it!!! good luck!!!

It really depends on how old you are to determine if it is too late.Since you are going to be 12, it is not too late. I hate to tell you, but to have your own violin is gonna cost a lot! I've seen violins for anywhere from $300-$600. If you are getting your violin through a school or community program that you have to return, it will most likely be free. The violin really isn't that hard. it is hard to teach yourself, but not hard to be taught how to do it. The notes will look like a bunch of jibberish at first, but then it will become easier really fast. Violin is really cool and a life-long fun experience.

No, it isn't hard. I am in grade School, and I have been playing for two years, and it is easy. There are some difficult parts, like wiggling your fingers(gargling the note), but you do not have to do that to play well. It is not really expensive, You can get a good violin on Ebay for 60 bucks. The notes are just normal scale notes, and mianly just stay from D-A in the bottom of the scale, and middle strings of the Violin (A+D). If you get a teacher, and practise Alot you can be good.
Good Luck!

Playing the violin is cool. It is hard but not that hard; you should (a) get a good violin; and (b) find a private teacher. If your parents can take you to a private teacher, you'll make much faster progress.
And no, it's not too late for you.
Good luck!

Its really not that hard. You can always learn to play at any age, as long as you're willing to dedicate the time to it. Reading music isn't that hard at all, its been a while since I took a music class, but they've got ways to help you remember, and I still do, F-A-C-E, anybody? Anyway, good luck! And instead of buying your own violin, because they can be expensive, your parents can rent them at music stores. Or get one at a pawn shop, like I did, only $100!
