A majority of the behavior is determined by the parents. If the parents behave a certain way, the kids will imitate it. For example, the stereotypes of boys being messy and into gross things and girls always being clean princesses. This stereotype doesn’t run true for all kids but it has been taught from the parent’s behavior and reaction to all sort of things.

TESTOSTERONE.
That's just the way they are. But also remember not all boys are like that and some girls are.
My boys wonder why girls like to play with boring stuff and not have fun (they make the exception for they're friend, Hannah, who loves mud and knows more about bugs than they do)

Boys start a interest in this at a very young age. I have 4 boys aged 4 up to age 12. All catch frogs, lizards, snakes and all types of bugs in bottles.
My hubby made them a screened cage for firefly's and crickets. One example when we were camping in our camper at the lake near here, I was using a little hand vacuum cleaner. I opened the bag to dump out the dust and this long red black and yellow snake came out of it.
It seems ( according to my 12 yr old ) it had escaped two days ago from this screened box and had been in our camper ( with us sleeping in there ) for two nights. Some how it crawled into the vacuum pipe and into the bag. Think every hair on my head stood on end. That's a short story of life with 4 boys. The rest I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

You know what else is fun?
Trapping a moth in a mud pile.
Or.. Making Mud cake.
And.. Finding clams from the beach and make BEACH MERMAIDS! WOOT!
Or... Digging beach sand till you get to the very bottom and make a beach pool.
And.. A bunch of other stuff.

It's not just boys that like mud and bugs. My 5 year old daughter loves playing with worms, frogs, lizards, ants, turtles etc. etc.... I was the same way as a kid.

Boys arent the only ones. I know of girls who like it too. I was somewhat of a tomboy growing up, preferred climbing trees and racetracks to baby dolls. Just didnt have an interest in frilly things.
Be thankful that when u take ur baby boy to the store, he goes to the GI Joe area instead of the barbi doll area hun.
I think its important to encourage interests and let kids be kids. Regardless what they become, we will love them anyway, but now is the time to be a little awnry boy.....so let him live. Bugs can be a cool thing......never know.....he may grow up to be like Grissom on CSI las Vegas. :)
Welcome to motherhood and congrats hun. Just let things be what they will. Its all good.

Ha ha - it reminds me of the old rhyme -
What are little boys made of, made of?
What are little boys made of?
Snips and snails, and puppy-dogs’ tails,
That’s what little boys are made of.
What are little girls made of, made of?
What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice, and everything nice,
That’s what little girls are made of.
We used to tease the boys with that but in fact I was a right tomboy and used to put on my brothers' old shorts and jumpers and get as mucky as the boys.
Then my Mother would call me in,strip me for a good wash in the kitchen, put up my hair and get me into a dress before my Grandmother saw me!
I brought up four boys and they all were to type (especially my two eldest) and I say that they took after *me* in that not their Father.
Best wishes,
Joan.
P.S.I just remembered my third got as mucky as the rest if not more but he *was* scared of spiders and still is so it's not that simple!
