I think that you are getting mixed up between Caligula and Nero, and it is all centred on whether the number of the beast is 666 or 616.
In Greek, names have numerical values. When we take the full name and title of Emperor Nero, that adds up to 666 as recorded in Revelation 13:18. This would seem fitting as Nero was the person responsible for the first persecution of the Christians, following accusations from Nero himself that they had been responsible for the burning of Rome in 64CE. It would therefore be fitting that Nero be regarded as the Beast.
In support of Caligula, his name and title (Gaius Caesar) add up to 616, which was the number of the Beast as stated in papyri found in Egypt in the 19th century. There is little other evidence though to support this however, other than Claigula setting up a statue of himself in the Temple of Jerusalem. He was also Emperor before Nero and the date of the writing of Revelations puts it after Nero's rule.
As for why St John the Divine was so cryptic, he did not want to come straight out with criticism of he Roman Empire as that would have led to more bloodshed aimed at the fledgling church. Revelations also follows an apocalyptic form of scripture writing that can also be seen in Daniel.

Hebrew characters can be letters or numbers. The letters that make up 666 spell Nero. The book of Revelation was written in Greek but refers to the Hebrew number. The early Christians would have understood that the writer was slagging off the emperor, but the Romans wouldn't.

the bible talks about 666 number in Revelation 13:18- It represents imperfection, since number 7 represents perfection, number 6 does not quite get there. The fact that is three times 6 is just giving emphasis to imperfection.

Thanks for the history lesson. Once again, history and science prove the Bible. The Revelation was written to the first century church (specifically the 7 churches of Asia) to encourage them to stand fast. The Roman Empire will fall and the church will be saved from Roman persecution. John used figuartive language such as the 'mark of the beast' and '666' to identify Rome. By doing this, the churches were able to send the letter from congregation to congregation without the threat of further persecution. Good job!

Thanks for that bit of historical insight. All through the bible the number 6 represents the devil. I believe the beast is man and the number 666 stands for the 3 parts of man.
1) Mind
2) Body
3) Spirit
I have come to believe that when John said his number is 666 he's saying that all three parts of man are evil. (without the Lord of course)

Acording to revelation the mark of the beast is stated to be six hundred and sixty six. It also mentioned that it is the number of man.
666 is not the number of the devil it is the number of man. 777 is the number of God because it is the number of completion or perfection. 666 is neither complete or perfect.
