There is a huge difference between a school counselor and a mental health counselor.
A college counseling center provides comprehensive counseling services to assist you with career plans and academic advising as well as help to work out personal or social problems. Counselors are available to both current and prospective students.
A mental health counselor is a professional who provides counseling to individuals, couples, families, groups, or larger systems. A mental health counselor may also have training in educational and vocational counseling. A significant point of reference to distinguish Mental Health Counselors from Social Workers, Psychologists, Nurse Practitioners, and Psychiatrists, is that Mental Health Counselors increasingly utilize a wellness model for counseling clients, versus (or in conjunction with) the more traditional medical/illness model for assessment and diagnosis. Working with clients from a perspective of wellness is defined by emphasizing the strengths present within all people and looking for the positive aspects of the self to enhance life, rather than simply looking at people as having a set of problems that need to be solved.

I don't know how things are done at your college, but in my experience we had advisers who were faculty members (usually professors in the field that you were pursuing) who you came to discuss what classes you should take and so on and so forth. I wouldn't recommend talking to them about life and problems because that may adversely impact the professional relationship you have with the professor, and he/she likely does not have the proper training.
If your college has a counseling center, than that would be where you would go to discuss life issues and such. Most colleges have licensed professionals or well-trained graduate students on staff that would have the proper skills to assist you with life problems. I would recommend going there if your school has one. If not, I would suggest that you seek out a professional counselor. There are many counseling centers that offer low-cost assistance, and if you have college insurance, it may cover the cost of a counselor. Best of luck to you.

A college counselor is a good place to start--tell them you'd like to chat about your life etc., and maybe they'll swing right into it with you, or direct you to someone else on campus who does that as a regular thing [i.e., on non-academic stuff]. I've had counselors at uni who were great with the everyday problems & such, and also had one who directed me to a counselor working in student health just for that purpose.
