Why is jogging in place much less tiring then jogging for distance?

Because it's really annoying and you'll stop doing it in a minute or two. Running is much better and if you get addicted you might just go out and do it for hours!

The rise and fall of your body is a big reason you burn energy; jogging in place, you don't go up and down as much as when you run long distances. Efficient sprinters also keep their bodies from bobbing up and down; watch them next time you see a race.

No hills. Plus you aren't actually moving your body weight jogging in place, you're just hopping.
