I was promoted recently and my boss is forgetful. He forgot my bday and ended up running out and getting me a box of stale donuts. I don't eat donuts :( Of course I ate one, smiled and said thanks. He went on a cruise and didn't bring anything back. I know he appreciates me because he verbally tells me daily what a great job I did. Also, I got the promotion over all the other girls he interviewed and people in our office after only working here 4 months.

Today, it is another girls bday and her boss (different than mine) brought her in a cute gift bag and in it was a VERY cute coach bag. Very thoughtful, since she only uses coach bags and not the standard purse. He went on the same cruise as my boss and brought her back some kind of Rum Cake thing, thoughful. I totally like this girl, she's way cool and fun to work with, so I have nothing against her.
I can't help but feel somewhat jealous... I know, it's not right to feel that way... but I do. :( Maybe he just doesn't know me yet?

Apparently some of you haven't worked in the office enviroment long enough to understand office etiquette - I never said I expected a gift. It's a thoughtful thing a boss does for his assistant.
Don't reply if you don't have the office knowledge, please. Thanks ;)

Your feelings are valid, but you must remember that everyone is different, including your respective bosses.

Your boss may improve over time, but you shouldn't rely on it, nor should you take it personally - some people simply aren't thoughtful, or he may feel that it's inappropriate to do anything that may be construed as "personal".

It's great that he praises your work on a regular basis - many bosses don't even do that, and it's more important on the job than a birthday gift or a souvenir.

If everything else about the job is good, don't sweat the personal touches, but don't beat yourself up for a touch of jealousy either - it's normal. Just don't let it ruin an otherwise good job.

It might not be that he forgets or doesnt appreciate you.

Different people feel differetly about office protocol. He may feel that getting you a gift would say inappropriate things in the eyes of others. People love to generate rumours and stories based on anything. He may just be particularly (over)sensitive to things like that.

In the end if he is a good boss otherwise, count your blessings, you could have a bad boss in many other ways.

Good luck.

How would you like to trade jobs with the other girls. I dont think so, if you really got a promotion. Do your job, what the boss does for others is none of your business. Concentrate on what you need to do best, and small favors will come around; although there is no commandment that says they are required. If you are working there in order to get those little notices instead of doing your job and getting a decent pay check then you are working for the wrong reason.
Check it out---internally with yourself.

Did you sleep with your boss or something....why do you expect all that? A nice card would be the most to expect...but that's pushing it.

He is your boss not your boyfriend, best friend, husband, father, brother....

As for the other girl...you should be questioning why she is getting that stuff...Unless she works a Coach and it s last seasons bag...there are other reasons.

Keep it professional and do your job...get rewarded with increased pay and purchase your own bag. Hang in there do not read into stuff like this...it will make you crazy!

I would blame it on the simple fact that your boss is a man but the other girls' boss is a man, too. Men aren't good at being thoughtful (ON THE WHOLE, not all men) like that.

He's probably just one that sucks at the gift thing. Don't be jealous.

Actually you ARE expecting a gift, especially if you gripe about it on YA!.

He is not your boyfriend, fiance, or husband so he does not have to give you gifts at all.

He praises you on your work, you should be VERY thankful for that.

I am in an office position and I NEVER get gifts. I also don't expect any.

I don't see why the bosses have to give their workers gifts at all.
In the office I worked in, at Christmas, we each got a card with a lottery ticket in it.
You get paid, don't you? Isn't that enough? If I was your boss' wife, I'd be upset if he was buying gifts for the sweet young things in his office.

Maybe you can stop being so whiny and pathetic, thinking that your boss has some sort of obligation to you on your birthday?

"I never said I expected a gift. It's a thoughtful thing a boss does for his assistant." WTF? If you've got to say something, ensure that it makes some sort of sense.

He's your boss. Anything he does for you for your birthday, etc. is extra. Obviously, he is not good regarding gifts and occasions. You were promoted. Live with it.

I do work in an office environment, and gifts are not to be expected, ever, even if someone else was given one.
