Love is the most important but other than that...the gift of nursing and breast milk. Nursing forms a very strong bond between mother and child and moms breast milk is the best thing for a baby. Breast milk has antibodies that formula will never have and it is a known fact that formula factories still can't produce over 100 things found in breast milk!

there is definitely more than one best thing a mother can give their baby.
loving their father is an irreplaceable best thing that every child should have but, many don't.
time and attention are incredibly vital.
loving them is so very important.
joy at their accomplishments is precious.
holding them, giving them physical affection is vital to life.
reading to your child starting at birth is a wonderful thing to do for a child. they learn to speak earlier and read earlier and more easily.
cooking with your child is very important.
I've heard that sand and water are the only "toys" a kid really needs.
I'm sure i've left out some very important things becasue babies need so very much.

Gentle,....yet FIRM boundaries. Love (REAL unconditional love) is something that maybe one in a million people can grasp so let's not go there...too easy to type but not completely grasp, or give. So lets stick to something that has a solid concept. I believe if you can let a BABY (and I suppose we are talking up to toddler age) a concrete understanding of what is and is not acceptable (waffling due to circumstances comes later) then you and your child will have very few battles of wills and you can enjoy each other.

drop off in day care feed it punch let it stay wet a long time and yell a lot do this if you want to raise a child that will hate you
if you want to bond with said child raise it breast feed it quit your job stay home and do a job no amount of money can do
love up and raise it teach it values morals and self worth
in otherwise give it a life worth living that you and it will be proud of
and a dad is a good thing for the child also
