Crawl? That probably due to the fact they defaulted on startup programs and desktops that assumed more powerful CPUs, but 20 G certainly is big even as today's boot up drive.
To maximize your use of horsepower, I suggest stay clear of KDE and GNOME, keep their libraries intact and installed is one thing but running them is another and you should avoid doing that. I found XFCE is lightweight, fast and consistent to be a usable desktop system.

Sure you can, Linux is not like heavy Windows!
You can run it, but not with full visual options, you know, you must have a good Video Adapter
I've ran Linux on 400 MHz, 4 GB Computer!!!
So you can!

Try old versions of Fedora or FreeBSD, I'm sure they will run with 500MHz speed. Hard drive space is not an issue 20GB is big enough.

Your best bet will be an earlier version of Redhat, I ran RH7 on a similar system. Ubuntu will not even install of that system, which is the distro I use.
