VMWare is to have a Virtual Machine on your PC. This is a program that once started will allow you another session of any other OS that you want.
For example you could run a Linux as an applicaiton in Windows Session. Theres also a server version that allow the administrator to run multiple OS is the same hardware. This is a way to reduce cost.

Well VMWare allows you to use 2 Operating systems. For example I am able to Use Liinux and Windows Xp the same time. I switch by just pressing 2 keys to Linux and back...
You boot and at the boot menu you choose with OS to boot to. And whiles in the OS eg XP you press some key then you are immediately moved to linus in another window real-time..

Chaos is right, emulation is probably a novelty fad and in that way VMware is not a _need_ item, but I think it is leading the way in virtualization, simulate the same type of PC inside a PC and do it in full speed, save cost and trouble with another dedicated server PC.

if your asking , you probably don't need it..
its handy for programmers for testing code is one thing.
also we used to connect to the uni unix system via pc via vmware if memory recalls.
its handy if you've got more than one pc or your a network person and you want to modify something on a remote machine or run something like rendering 3d models etc and want to check the other machine without having an additional monitor
