when i do splits, i usually rest a muscle group for a week before i hit it again. you can work out every day as long as you have a good split that doesn't tax muscles that are in the recovering phase.

You should let your muscles recover at least for a 24 hour period. This not to Say you shouldn't go to the gym. Lifting 5 days a week, I would go to the gym to either stretch the sore area or do some cardio to relieve some soreness. After a set schedule of lifting you will find that your muscles will no longer be as sore, or sore at all from continuous lifting. Try setting a workout routine as I did myself. I would train certain parts on certain days, guarantee that the muscle group that I would work out the next day would not be sore nor in any kind of pain. Try a workout schedule that start with the top of your body, such as shoulders and upper back and work your way down through the week, ending with calves and thighs last. If you don't lift as much divide your scheduled workout into a 3 day process, honestly that's all it takes. Upper. Middle, and Lower body is a good 3 day workout process to maintain.

You should leave at least 24-48 hours recovery before weight training the same muscle growth.

Over this period of time the body is repairing the muscle from the training it has been subject to. If you start to train during this period you will stop the recovery process and it will take longer for you to build muscle and your muscle will not be in very good condition.

Rest really is just as important as training. Eat lots of protein and water on your recovery days to aid the recovery process and re-build the muscle.

When you take up weight training, you will find that your muscles "ache"...This is because your muscles have been "torn" as a direct result of the exercises...They heal quickly and it's generally ok to exercise those same group of muscles after 24 hours.
