they do this about 4 times a year with about a weeks notice
however when we visit we have to stay in a local hotel and buyy our owm food and pay the lodgins
what would you do ?

Do you have to stay in a hotel when you visit them because they said you can't stay with them? Or is it your choice to have some privacy? Yes, it's annoying to have them in the house but at least they give you notice. I'd say just let them come and stay. You look like you are the better people in this situation. Sometimes things like this blow up and turn in to feuds where you don't speak with each other. Is it really worth losing the relationship over?

If it's only 4 times a year just buck up and bear it. They apparently feel comfortable enough in staying with you guys and maybe feel that by staying with you guys they will have more time to spend together as a family.

Tell them that there is a great hotel not far from you that have a great menu. Pick one and send them a leaflet. They'll get the message. The cheek of it. or you could cook them really awful food and give them dirty sheets and put a few used condoms by the bed maybe they'll never ask to stay again...............

Let them visit, its family. Why change just because they have a different set of rules. Meaning you always let them stay at your house changing it now would only be rude.....
However I wouldnt visit them often, too costly $$ you might want to bring this up, the next time they ask why you havent visited.

why just get a tent and stay in garden, they are part of your family weather you like it or not. stop looking for excuses plus you can always do same to them for a break you can choose your friends but unfortunately you can't choose your family your stuck with em so have a great time.

I;d say you have too much work, or we'll be out of town visiting friends, or else, say you have plans with friends who needs a lot of personal help. Keep repeating this.

They are your parents and want to share in your lives..bring a blow up mattress when you visit them..throw it on the floor and eat their food.....or go to the store together and cook.
It can be worked out if you just try

I would make them do what you have been made to do no matter what. weither its her parents or his parents go rent a hotel see how it feels not to be welcomed
