What's it actually about that's caused all the extremism among some Muslims in other countries.

The Iranians are angry over it, and they seem to be furious over everything that is different. They are the leading supporter of terrorism in the world, and believe in killing anything that disagrees with the brand of Islamic extremism. The "Satanic Verses" is really just a so-so book, but people admire the way it makes those crazy Iranian Ayatollahs all upset.

I have come to this conclusion that we Muslims should not bother about an insane scribe, funded by some agency and being a national of a state who still think that they rule the world. Do not forget that it is this country which is responsible for creation of infinite conflicts in the world, even funding them secretly (at the end of second world war, when their colonization came to an end) so that these states, most of which were unfortunately Muslim states, never progress. These facts are know to all.
Why bother and give importance to this insane scribe. It is this thing that they want. So best way to punish him is leave him to oblivion.

"What's it actually about that's caused all the extremism among some Muslims in other countries."???
I'm sure they were devout and sometimes fanatical anyway.
But let them be different - there's nothing bad in that - as long as its women and children are still given freedoms, rights, education and opportunities - the dress code is way too harsh as is the not being allowed to leave the house or drive a car thing, but otherwise they are good people, no?

There is so much anger over the Satanic Verses because of the content apparently it is inflammatory about Islam and Allah..one has to read it to really know but does not mean its not there...
The fatwa must have been issued for a reason...

It appear to mention aspects of Islam about which it is forbidden to speak. It's worth noting that only a tiny fraction of those who are screaming about it have actually read the thing.

Overall, the message of this entire encounter is that Islam and Muslims are obviously completely unprepared for anyone to say anything even vaguely critical of their religion.

In time, perhaps they'll grow up, but for the moment they are behaving like rabid animals when anyone says something about Islam they don't like. Just look at the fuss over those cartoons.

"WHITE WOMEN - NEVERMIND FAT, JEWISH, or NON-DEFERENTIALI WHITE WOMEN - WERE FOR ******* AND THROWING OVER"!

I know this does not go against Islam but surely you've heard the story of how it does. Salman Rushdie in the satanic verses goes against Whites, Blacks, Muslims, Hindus, anybody who is not an Asian Athiest.

Their religion tells them to kill anyone that says anything bad about islam. Remember the dutch cartoon incident. These are clearly not logical people. Here is a excerpt from their hate filled quran:

Sura 8:12,13 Muslims are instructed to cut the necks and fingers of those who opposed God and to never turn their back on unbelievers: "Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): 'I am with you: give firmness to the believers. I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them. This because they contended against God and His Apostle. If any contend against God and his Apostle, God is strict in punishment ... O ye who believe! When ye meet the unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them. If any do turn his back to them on such a day –unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own) – he draws on himself the wrath of God, and his abode is hell, – an evil refuge (indeed)! It is not ye who slew them; it was God."

Personally I got angry when I read it because of it's bland prose. Very boring to read, in my opinion. Why anyone else gets mad about it probably because they've nothing more interesting to do.
