Being good and being famous are often too entirely different things.
1. Have the intention. I know a lot of great artists no one has ever heard of.
2. Learn your craft. Find an approach that is leading edge, or a way of expressing art that is unique to you.
3. Understand your market. The buying public is what will put your name on the map, so if you paint great spark plugs, most people will not want to hang those over the couch.
4. Lean about other famous current artists who are making a great living. Thomas Kincaid, Howard Baherns, Noah,... for a good list go to www.artchannelgalleries.com as the artists being sold here are international.
5. You need an art publisher. Jane Rawlins would be no where with the Harry Potter books if she did not have a publisher.
6. Plan on attending Art Expo in New York city next year as some of the best artist and their publishers in the world exhibit there. Walk around for a couple of days and try to get a sense of what the market is and where your skill level has to be.
7. Get the book "the mystery of making it" by Jack white. it can be purchased on his website: www.jackwhiteartist.com
This is the insiders art manual to success.
Do all this stuff and ask me again in 5 years.

you should not go in to art with the intention of being famous, it's just as irrational as going into a resturant and eat the food so u could poo, u go to a resturaunt to enjoy the food without thinking of the after product, the same concept should be applied to art.

however if u want a little bit of recognition then enter local art competitions or as some1 already mentioned die tragically
