From personal experience with my Toshiba laptop, I can tell you that it's the cooling fan. Look at the top left corner of the laptop edge-on (from where you say the sound is coming) and you will see some slots or a screen and the sound will be eminating from there. If you put your hand near there, if the fan is still working reasonably well you will also notice warm air coming out.

Often the the fan will make this noise after you start the laptop until the unit warms up and any lubricants in the fan start to work better, then the noise may diminish.

At some point however the fan could fail completely, at which point the CPU may start locking up or slow down as it takes measures to protect itself against overheating. In this case you will have no choice but to look into getting the unit repaired (or DIY if you can find the part). You can hope that ignoring the problem until then will not cause an expensive failure of the CPU itself.

Or, as you stated it might desire to be the Cooler/Fan/Heatsink making the noice - wherein case is advantageous. My pc clicks now and lower back. that's the not easychronic in my case. My opinion - easily advantageous. it could probable be the not easychronic working away.
