I think you are looking for this symbol Σ. It is a Greek letter, a capital sigma. You can find it in the character map. In Windows XP the path is:
Start â All Programs â Accessories
â System Tools â Character Map
It has lots of special symbols.

You can get more signs and noy\t just the one u r looking for.
Goto start -> Programs --> Accessories ---> System Tools
----> Character Map
Select the characters you want by double clicking
Then click on copy
Open the application where you want to have those characters and paste them.
Alternatively you can press their codes which appear as tooltip when you keep the mouse over the character you want and look at their codes

BTW, as a follow-up on the solutions for MS Windows. The symbol character for a capital sigma (summation) is capital S. The reason is that 'sigma' is the name for 'S' in Greek.

I think that if you have microsoft word, you just go to the top where it says insert and click symbol and I believe you will find it.
