It's a very good question. It's always annoyed me that most sci-fi, especially in films and TV, assumes that aliens will be just the same as us, except with bumpy foreheads.

I think we would probably recognise "life" generally, though. If something eats, excretes, reproduces and moves of its own volition, then by any definition it is alive.

What will be harder to recognise, I think, is intelligence. There's absolutely no reason to suppose an intelligent being would resemble a human in any way at all. In particular, there's no reason to think they would communicate by means of sound waves, for example. So I think distinguishing between alien "animals" and "intelligent beings" will be the tricky thing.

Probably not as most aliens are so sophisticated that they could take on any shape they like.
Remember Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy the supreme beings in this case were mice. We see mice everyday but we do not percieve them to be aliens.

Taking that into consideration, I believe that aliens are real and have visited the earth but not in the stereotypical guise that they have been formed into. They probably dont look any different to you and me.

I suggest you watch a brilliant film called K-PAX to see what I mean and then you tell me if he was an alien inhabiting a human host for a while or a mad-man.

Hello,

(ANS) Human beings, or to be more precise the human ego always jumps to the assumption that alien life forms would come in the shape of creates like us, walking talking humanoids. Well frankly that's abit ridiculous in my opinion as its not going to happen.

Humans assume alien life forms would also be "carbon based" because all life on earth is carbon based.

No! I think alien life forms could be based on extremely different systems & substances for example silicon based life forms.

YES! I think human beings are intelligent enough to recognize if something alien was living or was a life form. It may not come in the shape or design or color we expect but I still think we would conclude it was alive.

maybe. If it comes in the form of an alien spaceship or some creatures that we recognize are as intelligent or more as we are.
but think of this: the planets themselves may be actually life forms, the stars -including the sun- galaxies. We humans may be just some kind of germ in the face of Earth.
look up gaia theory.

Alien life forms would likely be based on some sort of DNA not much different than ours.
Intelligent, technological aliens would probably be recognizable to us.
They could look like anything you could imagine but they would probably fall into a certain category.
They wouldn't be say 200 ft tall and they wouldn't be 1 inch tall, they could be like any mammals or cold blooded creatures on earth but they would have prehensile appendages that would allow them to manipulate objects like we do.
They would likely parallel us in intelligence and technology and be saddled with all the problems that mankind has.
Their hearing and sight would operate on the same wave lengths.

Kid I have flown from one end of the galaxy to the other. I have seen a lot strange stuff. But I have never seen anything to make me believe that there is some kind of all powerful force that controls everything. There is nothing controlling my destiny. Its all a lot of tricks and nonsense.

It's fairly easy to recognise - it comes on here disguised as a name and number and then posts stupid, meaningless answers of about 4,000 words which nobody can understand but which Yahoo allow to remain posted despite reports and thumbs-downs by the dozen, and then it wants you to keep listening to its voice by way of some equally waffle-loaded questions. Beware all takers ! ! !
