the crackling noise is annoying.........how do I mute it?

start--control panel--phone & modem--modems--click modem--properties--modem--speaker volumn off

start--control panel--right click your internet connection--select properties--connect using--configure--uncheck modem speaker

That annoying noise is made by physical hardware, not by any speakers or sound devices. There is no way to get rid of it. I agree it's annoying so just lower volume til you're connected.

Look under the modem's property page (control panel), normally they provide a valumn control for the modem.

The volume of the modem can be turned off in the modem properties.

depends on what type of modem you are using...some you can mute it on volume control.. others you need to turn off you speaker.
