OK, I didn't know or care who Guiliana was before 9/11, and thought he handled it well. Then, I heard nothing but bad things about his actual performance as mayor. I hear Bloomburgs doing a good job, but don't know the details. Who did what?

I lived in NYC when Bloomberg was elected and re-elected. His approval rating is at 70% now which is unheard of in American politics today and unprecedented in NYC. Compare that with Guiliani's 35% rating on September 10, 2001. In November of 2001 no one gave Bloomberg a chance against NYC's democratic machine and yet he was elected mayor.
Fiscally speaking, he's definitely not liberal and the most ultra-liberal New Yorkers hate him.
He's done an outstanding job as Mayor of NYC keeping that city financially afloat while recovering from the spiritual, psychological and economic disaster that 9/11 was. Bloomberg is recognized by both liberal and conservative media in NYC as one of the greatest mayors the city has ever had.
Rather than wait for the federal aid Bush promised in the wake of 9/11 and then never delivered, he implemented tax-cuts and cut social programs across the board. He even had the "audacity" to close some firehouses that were financially and tactically unnecessary.
He forced the Board of Education to stop the decades long policy of social promotion where kids were promoted regardless of grades. He insisted that kids who didn't pass reading and math proficiency tests would have to repeat grades and/or go to summer school. Where accountability was called for, he made accountability a requirement.
He has frequently and consistently gone to Washington D.C. to testify before Congress and complain about pork spending and irresponsible governing by BOTH parties.
He's fiscally conservative and socially liberal like most of America tends to be and unlike all of our politicians today, Mike Bloomberg made his money the old-fashioned way: he EARNED it. He doesn't take a salary as mayor and he won't as president either.
Rudy Guiliani's performance on 9/11 is grossly over-rated. He took advantage of a glorified photo oppotunity and out of sentimental weakness, with George Bush hiding on Air Force One, the media made Rudy a hero.
But you know what? 2000 more lives could have been saved on 9/11 if the FDNY had updated radio and communations equipment. In his eight previous years as mayor, Rudy denied the FDNY's funding request for new equipment EVERY YEAR and as a result more people and firefighters perished than would have otherwise.
In late 2001, before leaving office, while the rubble of the towers were still being examined for remains & DNA, Rudy told the workers to stop and ordered the remaining rubble to be used to fill potholes around the city.
On more than one occasion he has engaged in stereotypical ly scandalous behavior of the modern American politician. Mike Bloomberg is definitely NOT a stereotypical politician.
Rudy is a joke. Mike Bloomberg is the real deal.

What can you say about Mr. Guiliana; has the breeding of an alley cat. The only thing that worked for him was being at 9/11 at the right time. I wouldn't elect him to anything.
Mr. Bloomburg, is rich, OK nice if you have the money. I haven't seen any note worthy performance from him either that would qualify him to run for president. But who cares Bush made it and he is a basket case.

Bloomberg wants to turn NYC into a "Nanny State".
He thinks the govt is smarter than most people and therefore wants all restaurants to post the calories next to each menu item at restaurants. He supports removing transfats from fastfood dives and eliminating smoking from all public meeting places.
Now... All those are good ideas, but I'm smart enough to know that a huge steak, potato with butter and sourcream and a side dish of pasta in heavy cream sauce has more calories than a plate of steamed vegetables. I don't smoke, and I wish others didn't either but just who is the govt to dictate that to me?
Now here is why bloomberg really sucks. Under the guise of "Clean air" , bloomberg is pushing thru a toll increase on the bridges and tunnels into NYC. Many thousands of trucks, buses, vans and cars enter NYC to do business there every day. This is waht keeps he city alive. With bloombers plan it would cost a truck about $27 to cross the bridge. Who is going to pay for this increase? Not the business... Rather you and me. Those costs will be placed on the back of the consumer. But, hey... Bloomberg is rich...It's nothing to him, right?
Bloomie also wants to PAY public school children to do their homework, attend school, and pass tests!
I mean...W.T.H. ??? The already stressed and overtaxed people of NY and NJ, with their raised tolls, must now pay underperforming delinquents to GO TO SCHOOL!???!!!! What a stupid plan!
No... Bloomberg is leaning more left everyday. Crime is up since Rudy left and his claim to fame is that the NYC public schools is now UP to 60% graduation rate. 60%!!!!!!
WOW BLOOMIE!!!!! DID YOU KNOW THAT MEANS A WHOPPING 40% OF THE CHIDREN OF NYC DO NOT GRADUATE???????
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY THOUSANDS OF FUTURE WELFARE CASES THAT IS?????
OH!.... Ok!..... Mikey.... You'll simply increase the tolls of New Jersey people to support your future dropouts and delinquents!
