I don't think women have more complex needs than a man, just different ones.
It has been politically unfashionable to recognize those needs, or wants, for some time. But I think they are now, and always have been the same.
Security is a major factor. They want a man that will protect and support them. Physically, emotionally, and financially. They want to know that their man is going to be there for them. Sex is just as important to women as it is to men. But for different reasons. Aside from the simple pleasure of it, it is also an affirmation of her attractiveness and desirability. Another factor is her ability to enjoy "giving herself" to a man.
I think, on average, women are more mature and aware of their needs than men give them credit for.
Men, on the other hand, come in two basic versions. There are men and there are adult boys. Many men simply never grow up. Their spouse may as well be their mother. I believe that is the type you are refering to as only interested in sex/beer/food/football.
A man, a real man, compliments and completes the relationship by wanting to be the man, and enjoying that role, that satisfies his mate needs and wants. He is the protector, sexual partner, and supporter.
The dynamic of raising children is a whole different issue. But again, men and women have different attitudes and ways of doing that. Which, in an ideal world, the children benifit from both.

Lets be honest. Men and woman are different.
One of these differences are that woman are more emotional. Physically they have more connection to the part of the brain that controls emotions. That is how woman are able to look at a photo of persons face and KNOW what they are feeling. I believe that is where the "complexity" comes in. Who can really fulfill another emotional needs when considering the complexity of woman's emotions.

No I think it's more to do with PEOPLE having complex needs in relationships. The problem comes when these complex needs can't find any common ground.

Well define complex. If the need to being understood means you're complex then that is foolish. However, sometimes a flowchart and a good computer comes in handy when following a gal's conversation......JOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!
