It's appropriate whenever he feels the need. He probably does already but stress to him this is a private activity. He shouldn't be discussing it with you or anyone else.

In the past few hundred years, a trend has been evolving with each new generation. It is that puberty is begining to start earlier and earlier. Now days is is not uncommon to hear of girls to start puberty and menstration around the age of ten, and believe it or not cases have been documented as early as 9 years old that I am aware of. It would not be uncommon or unheard of if your son began the process of going through puberty around 10 to 11 years old. With the hormone increase, masturbation is a likely by-product. It is not so much masturbation that is the issue though. If he is private with it, and its not interfering with anything, then good. If he is looking at pornography, or materials that you do not want him to view, or getting on inappropriate internet sites, then you need to step in as a parent and end that. Other than that, I am sure if he is masturbating, you will not be the first person he comes to and tell. Its a very delicate subject matter for young boys, and it's important not to make them feel embarassed about it.

A 2004 survey by Toronto magazine NOW was answered by an unspecified number of thousands.[17] The results show that an overwhelming majority of the males — 81% — began masturbating between the ages of 10 and 15. Among females, the same figure was a more modest majority of 55%. (Note that surveys on sexual practices are prone to self-selection bias.) It is not uncommon however to begin much earlier, and this is more frequent among females: 18% had begun by the time they turned 10, and 6% already by the time they turned 6. Being the main outlet of child sexuality, masturbation has been observed in very young children. In the book Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America, by Strong, Devault and Sayad, the authors point out, "A baby boy may laugh in his crib while playing with his erect penis (although he does not ejaculate). Baby girls sometimes move their bodies rhythmically, almost violently, appearing to experience orgasm."
According to a Canadian survey of Now magazine readers cited above, the frequency of masturbation declines after the age of 17. However, most males masturbate daily or even more frequently well into their 20s and sometimes far beyond. This decline is more drastic among females, and more gradual among males. While females aged 13–17 masturbated almost once a day on average (and almost as often as their male peers), adult women only masturbated 8–9 times a month, compared to the 18–22 among men. It is also apparent that masturbation frequency declines with age. Adolescent youths report being able to masturbate to ejaculation six or more times per day, while men in middle age report being hard pressed to ejaculate even once per day. The survey does not give a full demographic breakdown of respondents, however, and the sexual history of respondents to this poll, who are readers of an urban Toronto lifestyle magazine, may not extend to the general population.

Hi,
let the boy go.....it is natural for the little boy to play even at 10, I know I did (now 40). You will also notice most boys/men when asleep, alot of that sleep time is with hands on guard.
I had a book that my mother bought me when I was about 11 y/o it was called "Everything a teenage boy should know". I'm sure you can still get it or something like it. Even at 10 y/o he will understand it if he reads it properly.
Please be open to talking about sex and our bodies with your boy (Not Graphic) so he knows that if he has problems that he can talk to you about it.
My mother is my best friend, being open saved me at 13

yo dude, i was 11.....
my dad has never talked to me about it, even after catching me!!
he told my mum that schools teach it - i wish....
so maybe ya should buy him like a book or somthing, and mark the masturbation bit, eh?
don't make a big thing about it. if he wants to know more, then he'll ask.
me: i was taught to jerk by my mate's 13 y.o brother.... he taught me to pump it way too fast. therefore like makes sure the book covers techniques too.
i'd have appreciated this....
i only found out about better ways when i was 15 from my best mate!! that was 4 years too many of pumping away like there was no tomorrow.....

Boys/Men usually don't discuss this with their parents.
Little do you know he might've been masturbating for 2 years already.

Well i think i was about 12 but who cares? He was going to do it eventually and if he's doing it now, his body is sending him signals. I understand your parental concern but like others have said, he probably won't be talking to you about it anytime soon. I'd say leave him be but let him know he can come to you. No one ever talked to me about it (and i don't know if i would have if someone approached me) but i seem to have turned out ok....

No definite age.
Just when he starts knowing about such stuff (as in his body changes). Or when he already has his wet dreams.
Hope this helps!
