The easiest way nowdays is to do it on computer software like Cubase or Reason. That way you can load instruments eg drums, bass, piano, one by one by buying sample discs or synths.

there are hundreds of options for this but essentially you need

1) an instrument, i would recommend a keyboard with midi so that you can hook it up to your computer.
2) a computer! with a good sound card
3) music software. If you are beginning try sony acid or magix music studio 12. When you have progressed try cubase / ambleton / pro tools or whatever you like the look of. I use renoise personally.
4) A mic, for recording vocals and other things.

I would recommend that you buy computer music magazine, iots £6 and you get a free dvd which has lots of free music software... infact everything you need to get started and lots of tips!

It's possible to create music via just a computer these days, though input devices expand your options. The more powerful your computer, ie. processor and RAM, the easier this will be for you.

Often you'll get free/demo software on magazines like 'Computer Music' in the UK. Otherwise, you can buy software like Cakewalk Pro, and others.

I suggest buying a couple of pc music magazines and having a read, though I'm sure some will suggest good sites to learn from.

Good luck! Rob

some suggestions, in no specific order: - Reaper is basically as good as professional techniques (extra advantageous, IMO) and expenses $40. That saves you a ton of money which you would be able to sink right into a competent interface. i desire to advise you get a firewire interface with the help of Apogee, Presonus, Focusrite, RME, or Alesis. seem for something with 4 or extra ins, MIDI, and a minimum of two preamps. - Get an spectacular pair of headphones. Sennheiser HD280 is super even for blending inspite of being closed-returned. - community contraptions Komplete is a entire good purchase and supplies you a crapload of useful contraptions from symphonic to rock. heavily, you would be surely mad to no longer purchase this. - you do no longer want an 88-key controller except you extremely plan on doing a touch Rachmaninov-esque piano artwork. have faith me, I talk from adventure. I certainly have an 88-key Yamaha digital piano which sounds and feels astounding yet is mendacity at my mum and dad' domicile because of the fact I have no area nor want for it in my domicile studio. 40 9 keys is the appropriate length. ensure you get something with pitch and mod wheels, some assignable knobs and faders and consistent with risk drum pads (very useful for drum programming). - Get a small determination of excellent, decrease priced mics. The Shure SM57 is a perennial generic, spectacular for snare, toms, electric guitar. The Studio initiatives C1 is outwardly virtually as good because of the fact the fabled Neumann U87, good for cymbals, acoustic contraptions of each and every type, and vocals. The Electro-Voice RE20 is spectacular for rapping, screaming, and aggressive male making a music, or perhaps kick drum. - if your selected interface does not have 'hi-Z'/'guitar'/'intense impedance' inputs, get a DI field. A Behringer one will do advantageous, at this factor it does not extremely matter quantity what you get. - bypass away the violin for now. that is not any longer properly worth as lots to a producer as you will be able to think of. Bass guitar is a extra advantageous, extra cost-effective thought. or you ought to get a competent acoustic guitar (Martin, Taylor, even Yamaha). - Get a hardware (analogue!) compressor as quickly as you may. The extremely spectacular Compressor is super, and espresso-priced. Message me in case you have extra questions.
