Ok, here's the deal:
Your baby is NOT constipated.
You said so yourself. If a baby's poops are still liquid-runny they aren't constipated. If a baby's poop is hard, like pellets, they are constipated. Constipation doesn't have to do with how often they go, it has to do with what the poop looks like.
He's crying because he's getting used to his system learning how to process formula (which is hard on babies.) He'll probably grunt or sound like he's pushing as well. None of that means he's constipated.
His sore bum is probably diaper rash, make sure you're using a cream like desitin, balmex, etc. every time you change him. If the sores don't go away, call the doctor the baby could have an infection.

I had the same issue with my son who is 10 1/2 months now. ok hear is the deal first check with doctor they might change his formula. There is a formula called nutramigen by enfamil worked great. Give the baby a (little) cereal in his bottle that will fill his belly up for the runny poo. For constipation i gave my son karo syrup in his bottel just a little bit and gently push on his bottom near his well you know it will stimulate it and relax him so he can poo my son loved that it was almost the only time he would do that when i pressed around there. hope i was helpful. he is probably collicy which will cause him to be that way. my mom told me when i was young i was that way and i would scream and my grandmom came over one day and took a tiny piece of ivory soap and put it up my bottom and they said it would sooooo well.

My daughter is the same age i switched her formula about a week ago and she went from 5-10 to none or maybe 1 a day. i was worried she may be constipated, but the Dr. said since her poop wasn't hard then she wasn't. But someone else told me she could have hard ones in there and the runny stuff is going around it and comming out. You should probably check with your Dr. especially for the sores. i haven't heard of that. If he is formula fed, he may be getting too much iron.

I'm not sure I always thought that at least one a day was OK, Are you breast feeding? Are the BM's watery or mucousy,if so I would call your Dr. Keep his bottom as clean and dry as possible and use a gentle diaper rash cream like aveeno diaper rash ointment. What may also help is to, after changing him clean him up and just let him lay on a diaper to allow his bottom to get some air, and that should help with the rash. As for him crying when he goes it may just be that his poo is irritating the rash but you may want to give your Dr a call and see what they think just to be on the safe side. Good luck hope he gets to feeling better:)!

He MIGHT be. Try offering cool boiled water between feeds. As to the sores, zinc and castor oil cream is pretty much ok for all babies - I'm wary of some of the other creams, one actually made my daughters nappy rash a thousand times worse.
Talk to your midwife or health visitor for more help.

Maybe it's constipation, but I think it's gas pain. However, babies magic tea is best for both problems. It's natural and preservative-free tea, so safe for babies.

My pedi says that breastfeeding babies may only have 1 stool diaper ever 1-3 days but should have plenty of wet diapers at least. If you see him struggling, take his legs are do bicycles slowly and softly this helps push out gas and can help him poop.

Why has he been on formula?
Formula is very hard to digest. It's basically like feeding you newborn mcdonalds and expecting thier digestive system to work properly.
Have you considered nursing your babe?
