In order to solve this first the denominator (bottom number) in both fractions must be the same so to do this you will have to find the lowest number that is divisible by both 3 and 36. It happens to be 36. Next you will multiply the numerator (top number) by how many times the denominator goes into the common denominator like this 36 goes into 36 only once so then you multiply 23 by 1 now you have the fraction 23/36 the same with the other one, 3 goes into 36 12 times then multiply 12 by 1 and now you have the fraction 12/36 now that they both have a common denominator, you are ready to subtract. When subtracting you only subtract the numerators but keep the denominators and your answer will be 11/36
23/36-1/3=
common denominator is 36
36 divided by 36= 1
1x23= 23
23/36
36 divided by 3= 12
12x1= 12
12/36
23/36-12/36= 11/36
