Are you talking about covered bridges? I believe the original purpose was to more easily get horses to cross the bridge by making them think they were entering a barn rather than crossing over a body of runningwater (river, creek, stream, brook).

Because bridged were orginally wooden, and putting a roof on them slowed the decay process brought on by exposure to the weather.
