long story short.... 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis just crapped out on on interstate one day. Had it towed to nearest dealership and they said that it was "possibly" a bad oil pump and caused the engine to seize. Warranty was voided due to lack of maintenace receipts (as luck would have it). I don't plan to keep the car cause I already got a new one but you can't really seel a car that doesn't run. So should I have the engine rebuilt or replaced with a rebulit one? I'm afraid to go to a mechanic because I don't want to get bad info. HELP!

You can sell a non-running car-you'd be surprised @ the number of DIY auto repair-types that'd love to have a project car providing the price is low enough.

Rebuilt or replaced with a rebuilt is going to cost roughly the same anyways, a lot of money you might not realize if you are able to sell it after repairs are made.

Ask a mechanic-or ask two or three of them-that way you won't get a narrow viewpoint aimed at getting your money.

Good Luck!

a remanufactured engine might be better because even after you repair the original engine, you dont know what stress the engine block took. also consider

# The labor of removing the engine and replacing it in the vehicle.

# The cost of the rebuild or the replacement engine, in both parts and labor.

# Various auxiliary parts that you will have to install to get the rebuilt or new engine running - belts, hoses, plugs, filters, oil, coolant, etc.

It may be cheaper to just replace the engine with one out of a salvage yard. At least check prices and see what they will charge. That was the route I chose when I had the same problem as you.

There are places that will take you car as is, you won't get paid but you can use it on your taxes as a donation to a charity. Check out the links or sell it to a pick 'n pull.

find a independent mechanic you can trust, ask friends , look on the net, then go from there, I decided against fixing my countours trans and selling it broke. you will tie up alot of money in the repair. I say let the new owner get it fixed.
