usually through advertisements. Sometimes they're less noticeable (like google's ads).
otherwise, they make money through donations (like Wikipedia) or whatever through their website sells...etc.
other than that, they might not be making money at all! some websites are just run by people without expecting profit in any way.

There are only a few basic ways....
1. If your site gets a lot of traffic you can use an affiliate advertising system like Google Adsense, that is Google's targeted ads appear on your site, and Google pays you when people click on them. Or maybe if your in a niche market you can charge people money for placing ads on your site.
2. You see something from your website, either a product or a service.
3. Your website doesn't make money directly rather it may promote your off line business, like an auto delaership or real estate web site..

Most website earn there money tho selling stuff just like you would on e-bay. Just that they are there own business and have there site keyword to like yahoo msn goggle ask (aka) Jeeves
so when say you search tools there website comes up and click on it and it takes you to there site.Ans then if people are inrsted in buying they most likely use pay-pal> I hope I have helped you.

Either through ads or through selling some products and or services. Otherwise, the website may be a forum for knowledge and an advertisement medium.

Thats a really good question.. I've been wondering who pays for craigslist. I know a lot of sites get paid by affiliates.. if you go to buy something they get a commision even if they don't have banners.
