why all are thinking amerians were there in vietnam to help people? even today people are suffering from the chemical remainings in the soil and in the air, most of them have lung problems, the lands are still impotent because of the nice helping way of americans! who invited them there to start helipng by destroying peoples lives? they landed without any excuse and did whatever they felt like doing and after about to half century they are trying to say that they just wanted to help! this can be called the most meaningless excuse to make!
americans have always thought that they have the right to decide about the destiny of each n every nation wether they are alllowed according to international rules or not, they never care, they just want to interfere in every issue anywhere!

a wild wolf never appoligizes the cattle for slitting the sheeps' throats and devouring the lambs!

Japan sided with the Nazis in WWII, and both Japan and Germany should apologize to the world.
I think that America should apologize to VietNam not because of the VietNam War, but because the Agent Orange is still affecting the VietNamese people to this day. I think that America should go clean up the chemical mess that we made, but I don't think that we should apologize for the war.
And the long-term effects of Agent Orange may not have been known at the time that it was dropped in VietNam.

Like they all have said, we were there to help the Vietnamese from becoming an entirely communist country. We were invited over there by the French in the mid-1950's as "advisers" first, and as the fighting escalated between the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong in the South, we got more and more involved. Over 2 million Americans served over there at one point or another over the next 20 years (1975 was when it ended), and over 58,000 died.
Japan, on the other hand, wanted to expand their territory in the Pacific and mainland Asia (mainly China, who they'd fought against for years). Up till then, we had been trading oil (which we were low on) and iron (used by the Japanese to make weapons of war) with Japan, but when she began to have "imperialistic dreams", we stopped all trade . Later, we offered to resume this trading if Japan would end all warlike aggressions, and she felt we'd become weak and flabby. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941, the US declared war on Japan--the only one of the 3 Axis countries involved (we did not declare war on Germany or Italy). After the war ended in 1945, Japan swore she would "own the USA within 50 years" and she almost did--with their cars, computers, electronics, etc. There used to be an old joke that said if a product's tag says "Made in Japan" it wouldn't last 5 minutes.

The US does not apologize to Vietnam because they are not big enough to admit the magnitude of their mistake. Still, the US would like Japan to apologize for WWII, because it is far easier to browbeat someone else into apologizing for mistakes than it is to admit one's own.

This whole "public apology" thing gets rediculous. I think you have a good point in feeling confused. I have the perfect solution to the problem, though: How about if contries don't screw up or get in anyone else's business? That way, no apoligies are necessary, everyone's happier, and there are less dead people.

Because America is still technically at war with Vietnam.
No cease fire or treaty has ever been signed.

Would Bush apolgise to Iraq right now?
Same thing.

War is War. An apology is never enough.

Japan didn't leave a warning, and they were suppose to. It's like the phrase "you can't kill a person in their sleep"...
